My week of eating out...
7.30pm Friday night: I was lucky enough to get a booking at Bizerca in Cape Town, after a week of craving their steak tartare – heavenly spiced and with just the right texture … And oh, those fine-cut chips to dip into every morsel! The much-talked-about caramelised pork hock was on the menu. It arrived as a beautifully sticky stack of melt-in-the-mouth pork, with an Asian dressing dip and the most delicately sliced veggies. I oohed and aahed as I do when presented with a plate of tastes that, well, just make me fall in love. Of course I ate lots more (couldn’t resist the pork trotters) and for dessert had the grown-up version of classic peach Melba – a perfectly poached peach smothered with a tart and fragrant raspberry sauce and chef Laurent Deslandes’ heavenly vanilla ice cream. I do love Laurent’s approach to food: it’s always real, but so special.
8.00pm Saturday night: We’re not the kind of couple that rush out for a romantic Valentine’s
dinner, but hey – we had forgotten it was the 14th and had booked a
baby sitter. I made a reservation at Nova where Richard Carstens
dazzles in the kitchen...read what happened next.
PS: I’ll be bringing you my food diary every week and Kobus van der Merwe, Eat Out’s online editor, will keep you up to date with the latest news, events and trends in Kobus’s News Bites.
