Abigail’s Diary
Thursday 10am: My week of nostalgia...

Firstly, thank you all so much for sharing your ideas with us here at Eat Out. We love hearing from you and if there is anything that you would like me to focus on in my newsletters, just email me.

I discovered at a trend talk recently that farming was the new “thing to do”. I can't run away to a farm right now, but I was inspired by what you can harvest from the land and how you can make it last from one season to the next. I immediately thought about those forgotten vegetables that are now creeping back onto restaurant menus… Cauliflower purée, creamed miso corn, poached turnips. I’m loving them.

Last weekend, while passing through Bredasdorp, I stopped at a local bazaar and packed my bags with homemade apricot jam, green fig preserve, moskonfyt, piccalilli and green beans.

So this week I’m ready to spend some time away from restaurants (I have a list to visit in Pretoria next week) and will be filling jars with crimson poached quince (now in season). I’ll have this old-fashioned fruit topped with yoghurt and served with a perfect slice of creamy, ripe Gorgonzola.

I look forward to meeting you at our very first Eat Out supper club at La Colombe this month, where Chef of the Year Luke Dale-Roberts will share his new trend of “preserving your harvest”.

Happy eating
