Food:

The menu, while not extensive, features retro items ranging from avocado Ritz to Crêpe Suzette. The Caesar salad is a generous mound of Iceberg lettuce and thick shavings of parmesan along with the anchovies, capers, croutons, bacon, hard-boiled egg and mayo dressing. Specials of the day may include smoked duck breast and citrus salad; steamed asparagus with lemon butter; a veal chop with grilled tomato and fried mushrooms; or fillet on the bone with porcini mushrooms, marrow bone and red wine sauce.

Wine:

A large and comprehensive list, ranging from local heavyweights (like Laibach The Ladybird and Meerlust Rubicon) to Dom Pérignon 2000, and everything in between.

Service:

The knowledgeable and professional headwaiter moves between tables, ensuring guests are happy and cared for. He is ably supported by other staff.

Ambience:

Large round tables surrounded by mock Jacobean high-back chairs set the stage, while large heaters and leopard- and zebra-print blankets keep the cold at bay on the veranda. The elements of African safari in the décor could remind a little too much of a scene from Out of Africa.

And...:

Be prepared for the R150 minimum charge per person. (HF, October 2011)
