Food:

While meat is its claim to fame, there are many retro starters to while away the time while it is being prepared, like peri peri chicken livers in a spicy cream brandy sauce or sticky pork spare ribs. The main attraction is any kind of steak cut, served with a large range of sauces including monkeygland or blue cheese. There is also a huge range of fish dishes for the noncarnivore.

Wine:

The extensive prize-winning list includes many good by-the-glass options.

Service:

Slick, professional and well-trained.

Ambience:

This is expense-account country with plenty of shiny brass and wood, cosy with the comfort that money brings. Not your average steakhouse, and it has the track record to prove it.

I went to Belthazar last night to celebrate a special occasion and was horribly disappointed. It really was an insipid affair. My meal was nice, but my partner’s steak was a disgrace. A piece of meat so chewy and full of sinew that it was more a task of looking for meat than enjoying a meal - * this particular cut was recommended to us. The service was okay to average, but we were treated glaringly differently to the foreign table sitting next to us. The card machines were also not working at the end of the evening and no one seemed to care. I could rant on for a while, but all in all I was left utterly disappointed from what could have been a great night at “The Best Steak House in South Africa.” Suggest people spend their money somewhere more deserving, where they have a little more regard for local customers.

Went there for dinner last night with my sister. After I finished mine which was ok - I saw she had left half of hers. I attempted to finish it off but couldn't. Even cut through the darn thing. I summoned the manager - took him to the wall where all their "awards" are and plainly said: "this piece of meat insults every single peice of paper on this wall." I then asked him to cut through the steak which left him in utter silence and shame. At R300 starting for a bottle of wine, prices sky high (no, you don't get fries with your steak!), decor to die for - it was the most disappointing experience I've ever had. Not to mention the cocky co-manager full of statements that actually indicate that it's just "how it is". There is just absolutely no excuse for such terrible meat, not to mention the absolutely ridiculous customer service. Unprofessional - (after 5 minutes of backwards and forwards the charge was dropped at least) - although I'm ashamed to be a Capetonian if that's the level of quality control in one of our "top" restaurants. I could have found a better steak at the railway station kiosk.
