The Sandpiper and Cocktail Bar 

Small seaside towns often have restaurants like this one – relaxed and easygoing, with a large stoep overlooking the sea, friendly local waitrons and a varied menu of seafood and grills. It’s the kind of place where the whole family (sandy feet and all) can be fed after a day on the beach. The menu offers wraps, burgers, salads, grills such as T-bone steak, rump and ribs, and a small selection of seafood including the delicious Sandpiper platter which is excellent value for money at R75 for a large platter including prawns, shrimp rissoles, kingklip and lightly fried calamari. For the sandcastle builders, there’s a separate, small menu and a swing and slide. The wine list is limited but affordable. (AG)

Every year we go to this restaurant over Christmas and New Year. On the 5th we were in a party of 10 (6 adults and 4 children). The service was shocking, the food unappetising and the attitude of the waiter beyond belief. Of the 10 meals ordered, one came long after all the others (first plates came out the kitchen after an hour), most of the meals were cold, the chips were disgusting oil filled pieces of old chips that must have been made the day before. In order to complain and find out what the heck was happening to our food, we had to chase the manager down inside the office. Eventually the manager sorted our bill out as compensation for the bad service. He took off the charges for the cold meals. Still, after the fiasco, we will most likely never go back. The restaurant was recently sold. The new owners either don't have a clue or can't be bothered.
