Owner's description

At The Red Tin Roof they focus on local cuisine, with a twist. They showcase some of Swartland's best wines and their waitrons are cheerful and charming. Their food is presented on wine vat boards. You could choose from a vetkoek burger or a Swartland ploughmans. They recommend guests to relax and take a dip in their swimming pool and allow their staff to wait on them hand and foot.

The restaurant is situated in one of the 'grand old dames' of the valley in a centuries old manor house that guards Riebeeck Kasteel's South-Eastern entrance on Hermon Road. Owner's Sam and Jacques recently re-vamped the restaurant from head to toe and decorated it with an eclectic mix of art and collectibles accumulated from around the world.

The restaurant is spacious, airy and colourful and guests can be treated to some good old 'honkeytonk' on the bar piano whilst the locals gather for a happy hour drink.

Where do I actually start. off no COVID protocols were even followed! We walked in no staff member to welcome us. Waited around for 5min and then just asked a waiter can we sit at a table! Eventually seated ourselves and went and ordered drinks at the bar because the service was nonexistent. Then after another 15min we requested menus to which we were told they stop serving lunch and only opening up at 6pm! However food was coming out whilst being there so we asked can’t they just possibly make a bowl of chips or anything snack based because we hadn’t eaten yet. Couple min later the manager/owner comes out and started going off at my friends wife asking how can we come to a restaurant at 14:45 and expect to have food. 1st off in today’s times one should really look after your guests and not treat them in such a terrible manner. 2nd we are not from the area and accustomed to restaurants that stay open all day. I’m sure their food is good but I can guarantee I will never ever go back.

We stayed at Travellers Rest with our adult son and daughter and had a lovely couple of days. We had 3 of the 4 en-suite rooms in the guest cottage which were all well equipped, spotlessly clean, charmingly decorated, air conditioned and had verandahs overlooking the garden. The owners, George and Michael, made us very welcome, George is a very entertaining and attentive host and gave us some great recommendation wine tasting venues in the area. Michael is the chef and is very talented, the lunch in the garden was exceptional, as was the lavish breakfast on both days. The garden is pretty with plenty of shade and a pool to cool off in if it gets too hot. We were very impressed, had a brilliant time and thought it amazing value for money. We would recommend a meal or a stay there to anyone.

Spent several days at Travelers Rest in January and the meals prepared by Chef/Owner Michael were a revelation. George/Co Owner, played the perfect host. The steak, prepared, a point, was one of the best I've eaten. But save room for dessert because Chef Michael is a master. The service is impeccable and the location couldn't be more perfect.

What a delightful and charming place! The hosts, Michael and George made us so welcome and the food was really excellent. Great choice of delicious things to decide upon and ours was beautifully prepared with skill from wonderful fresh produce. A very charming and relaxing space, we had a perfect Sunday lunch experience and will so be back to visit again. Well done - you are doing a great job there and will clearly have many very satisfied guests - thank you!

What a wonderful find in Riebeek. Fabulous food with a great menu selection and well priced. Ambience in the garden under the tree in the beautiful sunshine was just superb. Good selection of local wines too - even wine from Wellington and Darling feature well.
