Food:

The first proper beer bar in South Africa might be forgiven for overlooking food but, to the contrary, the place pumps out simple and delicious offerings that best showcase their beloved brews. Expect plenty of pig: pulled pork sandwiches, charcuterie boards, spicy sausages and bacon sandwiches. The beef prego (cooked on a smoky braai) is legendary too. Cheese platters, salmon, solid breakfasts and good coffee round off the menu nicely.

Wine:

It’s really all about the beer here, but the owners have made big strides with their wine list. So much so that they’ve hired an on-site wine expert to guide you through the boutique wineries on their list, which sometimes includes experiments from seasoned farms and winemakers. Regular tastings featuring a specific winemaker or theme are a nice touch.

Service:

Order at the counter, sit back and your food will be brought to you by one of the energetic, cool guys dressed in t-shirts sporting phrases like ‘We love real beer’.

Ambience:

Barcelona-ish. A tiny space with marbled bar counters, hanging legs of ham, low-slung eating counters and a great outdoor area with communal wooden benches. The crowd is full of regulars and there’s a real community feel.

And...:

Table-tennis replaces a pool table as entertainment. Grab a beer and a paddle and challenge your mates. Also, watch out for their live music gigs on Wednesdays. They’re huge. (AF, October 2011)
