The Local Grill (Boksburg)

The latest addition to the Local Grill franchise is in Boksburg. On offer is their regular specialities – freshly shucked oysters, grilled calamari, fresh line fish, gourmet salads and more. The wine list is extensive, with lots of boutique wines.

We went to the Local Grill after their award on Eat Out. In short, the service is good, but the food had to be sent back every time. Not what we expected. As per the waiter we filled in a report card so they can phone us and make up for it. No reply till date. Really not happy with this restaurant.

Based on the fact that Eat Out has recently awarded The Local Grill Best Steakhouse 2011 we went and tried the Boksburg branch. Clearly expecting a superb steak to be served we had high expectations. I'm sorry to say that those expectations were not met in any possible way. On arrival we were sat at a table with a dirty table cloth. The waiter was prompt with taking the drinks order and serving them. As we were first time visitors he was very helpful explaining the menu and the different grain fed and free range steaks available. I still cannot fathom why a free range animal would not have a fillet? His explanation to this was that the animal runs around too much and therefore the fillet is too tough!

My husband ordered the free range Wing Rib 500g cooked medium with mash and I ordered a grain fed fillet 200g medium with chips. The waiter explained something about putting a rub on the steak which my husband opted for, I wanted my fillet butter basted.

The meal was served within a reasonable time but even as my steak was placed in front of me I could see it wasn't cooked to medium at all but had been taken way beyond, it looked like a grey / brown ball of string with a tiny pat of butter sitting on top that was not melting as the steak was going cold. My husband's Wing Rib looked very promising but no rub was on it which was puzzling. My husband's side dish of mash took a long time to come and then it was mushrooms, the waiter hadn't listened! So another wait while they quickly brought out the mash.

My fillet was absolutely awful, grey, stringy and totally tasteless, the chips were straw fries that had been passed over a cold fryer as they were greasy and limp. My husband's steak was cooked perfectly but unusually for a wing rib it too was totally without taste. By this time I had given up on trying to eat my steak and trying to get a waiter's attention, any waiter would do but no, I had to eventually get up and go find the manager.

I exchanged my steak for a chicken salad and to be fair it was lovely.

The manager was very concerned about our complaint and wanted us too fill out the report back card so they could discuss it with the owner and offer us a meal for another day but to be brutully honest by then all we wanted to do was get out and never go back, free meal or not.

On presentation of the bill we wanted to make sure we paid for the meals eaten and when questioning why my husbands steak was cheaper than on the menu found out that the waiter had got it wrong again and had given him the grain fed wing rib not the free range wing rib.

Bottom line, we will go back to our favourite steak house at Melrose Arch where the steak tastes like steak, the order is correct and we can have a lovely meal out.
