HQ (Sandton)

If you cannot cope in today’s modern world where consumers are spoilt for choice, then this is the place for you. This establishment offers one meal: a green salad (comprising lettuce, Grana Padano cheese, and toasted pine nuts with a French vinaigrette) followed by grilled sirloin topped with a rich Café de Paris herbed butter sauce, and crispy pommes frites. It doesn’t take much imagination to realise that ingredients are key. Happily, the steak is perfectly cooked and is the star of the show, along with the addictive secret sauce. There is also a small dessert menu.

This is where you can use your free will. There’s an extensive list with more than 40 varietals by the glass.

Efficient, but sometimes too fast as the meat can come before you’ve eaten your salad.

Modern, with upholstered chairs or banquette seating. There are deck tables on the terrace.

The concept is inspired by the famous European restaurant group Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte. There is also a Cape Town operation. (JW, October 2011)

Terrible food for R160 a plate. The chips are not "double fried" as touted. The herbed butter, atrocious. The best part of the meal was the salad. Excellent service, great wine list.
