11 must-try cheesy dishes in the Western Cape

With loaded fries, huge burgers and pastas galore, the Western Cape has almost too many fantastic cheesy dishes from which to choose. We rounded up our favourites.

Bones Kitchen & Bar (Woodstock)

This not-so-hidden gem has stolen the hearts of many and there’s no wondering why. Seemingly everything on the menu is good here, and considering it’s a steak-forward bistro, you’ll obviously be ordering something from the grill section. However, when it comes to starters, don’t overlook the parmesan bon bons, which have already amassed a cult following. These cheese croquettes, which are crumbed and deep-fried, come served with a hearty mushroom ragout.

Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room (City Centre)

Perennial cool-kid spot Clarke’s delivers as much on food as it does on vibe and it’s famous for not one but two cheesy dishes. The first is the grilled cheese sandwich served alongside smoked tomato soup. Though it may be just a simple cheese toastie, they use the best Danbo cheese and homemade white bread, and toast it to a texture perfect for dipping into their famous soup. The second cheesy winner is the cheese fries with pico de gallo.

The Conservatory at The Cellars Hohenort (Constantia)

Is there anything more satisfying than a cheese soufflé? We think not, and the one at The Conservatory in Constantia must be doing something right with theirs, made with aged boland cheese and served with shaved parmesan and a cheesy gin sauce.

The Cousins (City Centre)

Lovers of both carbs and cheese will find a piece of heaven at this Mother City trattoria. The signature dish, The Cousins, comprises freshly made taglioni pasta and a simple mushroom-and-cream sauce. It’s theatrically finished off in a giant wheel of real-deal parmigiano reggiano. Dramatic, rich and oh-so-cheesy.

Jason Bakery (Green Point)

From the buttery croissants and weekend doughssants to the house-made pies and crusty sourdough loaves, there’s really nothing disappointing at Jason, but there’s something particularly irresistible about the Kimcheese toastie. Kimchi (made in-house), emmental and mozzarella are sandwiched between two slices of toasted sourdough and topped with a fried egg. This sandwich is all kinds of spicy, rich and cheesy.

Junior (City Centre)

The chips at this hip burger joint get a cheesy thumbs up from us. Thin, golden and crisp, they’re doused in a marvelously cheesy sauce. The American-style fries are good enough on their own, but the preservative-free sauce, made fresh on-site with sharp cheddar cheese, is the perfect condiment.

The Raptor Room (Zonnebloem)

The humble macaroni and cheese isn’t necessarily the easiest thing to master but, when done right, it’s a triumph of cheesy pleasure. The Raptor Room’s manages to steal the spotlight even from the gourmet gatsbies. A classic cheddar base is sprinkled with toasted roosterkoek crumbs and topped with a large Parmesan crisp.

Winelands

Delheim Garden Restaurant (Stellenbosch)

Wind down your weekend with Delheim’s famous winter cheese fondue and jazz Sundays from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Hosted in the toasty wine cellar with its low ceilings and candlelit tables, the event marries good food, quality estate wines and jazzy jingles. Cheese fondues are prepared with emmental, gruyère and white wine, and come served with fresh baguette dippers and vegetable crudités. The cost is R230 per person, which includes a glass of glühwein on arrival. The jazz and fondue only takes place in winter until 25 August.

The Goatshed Restaurant (Paarl)

The selection at this cheese farm’s popular restaurant offers a selection of 18 of Fairview’s finest jersey and goat’s milk cheeses served with preserves and fresh artisanal breads. Order a platter for one or two, comprising cheeses like chevin with black pepper and paprika; goat’s milk camembert; White Rock with glazed figs; and nutty matured gouda. There’s also a dish of cheese risotto cakes. This comforting dish is made using black-pepper cream cheese, truffle oil, blue cheese or brie.

Jordan Restaurant (Stellenbosch)

George Jardine’s simple, seasonal food at Jordan has long been a reason for a trip out to the Winelands. Despite the menu changing regularly, one thing remains constant – the trip to the cheese room option at the end. The famed room is home to cheese from local producers such as Fairview Blue Rock and Cremalat gorgonzola, Klein Rivier gruyère and Dalewood Huguenot, as well as a great selection of goat’s cheese. Diners are invited to piece together their own cheese platter to be enjoyed either for dessert or as a snack with wine.

SCHOON and Schoon Manufactory Café (Somerset West and Stellenbosch)

You could quite happily spend an entire day at Schoon, slowly picking your way through each and every baked treat. If you’re looking for something particularly cheesy, though, the Schoon hot press will certainly do the trick, featuring three cheeses and honey-roasted tomato.
