12 of the most unusual foods that have ever been served on a stick

Here in SA, the chicken kebab is probably our most popular stick-based dish. But elsewhere in the world, creative chefs are prone to putting all sorts of things on skewers. Here are 12 of our favourites.

1. Brussels sprouts and bacon
We reckon these parmesan-dusted beauties – an inspired combination – will persuade most of your guests to eat their greens.

2. Asparagus on a stick
In Japan, kushiyaki is a popular form of skewered grilled meat and veggies. We might just steal the asparagus idea for ourselves!

Yakitori night at Torisawa where the chef had trained at #Torishiki – the top yakitori restaurant in Tokyo which is pretty hard to book. Torisawa was no walk in the park either as I tried to book via #Visa concierge as an experiment, only to have them revert that the restaurant doesn’t accept customers who can’t understand Japanese. So we ended up calling ourselves in Japanese to make the booking. My theory is that since they serve semi-raw meat and organs, they don’t want to serve people who may not understand the risks as they did not have any English speaking staff. There was no menu here so we just ordered the omakase where they will keep serving you different chicken parts until you tell them to stop. • Torisawa 鳥さわ Tokyo, Japan #supermelJapan A photo posted by Melissa | Food & Travel (@supertastermel) on

3. Eggs on a stick
It might sound impossible, but the Japanese have figured out how to do it – and my, doesn’t it look delicious?

4. Cheesecake on a stick
We were slightly concerned about the structural integrity of this piece of pumpkin cheesecake, until we realised it was frozen before being dipped in chocolate. 10 points for creativity!

5. Waffle on a stick
In Australia, at Waffle on a Stick, the team serves… er, waffles on sticks. This beauty is slathered in Nutella and topped with strawberries and itty-bitty umbrellas.

6. Sweetcorn on a stick
In Mexico, elote (or corn on the cob) is a popular way to serve sweetcorn. Charred until nutty, it’s then covered in sour cream and mayo and topped with chilli, garlic, and coriander. Try it at your next braai.

7. Battered hot dogs covered in chips on a stick
You’ll have to travel to Seoul to experience this magnificent-sounding treat. (We reckon it’s safe to say you probably shouldn’t try this one at home!)

8. Stromboli on a stick
Invest in some cured meats and cheeses and stuff them inside your standard stokbrood recipe to recreate these Italian beauties.

9. Fried mochi on a stick
Made with sweet rice flour and cornstarch, fried mochi balls are popular in the Philippines.

10. Deep-fried peanut-butter-and-jam sandwiches on a stick
This somewhat-inadvisable treat is available in Calgary, Canada. Those smaller round things are deep-fried peanut-butter cups, in case you were wondering.

11. Bananas on a stick
This clever, healthier dessert is easy to recreate at home. Begin by spiking fresh bananas with ice lolly sticks, then dip into chocolate and decorate as you see fit. Chill them so they set before serving.

12. Chilli mango on a stick
At Smorgasburg in New York, you can get your hands on this incredibly refreshing-sounding snack. (Try a dusting of chilli and a squeeze of lime on your watermelon too – delicious!)

Not convinced?
Whether you call them sosaties, kebabs or just plain delicious, there’s a whole range of ready-made, pre-marinated super skewers at your local Woolies.
