2015 Boschendal Style Award Nominee: Makaron

Our fourth nominee for the 2015 Boschendal Style Awards is the effortlessly chic Makaron at Majeka House in Stellenbosch. This polished space combines both stylish décor and food to create a dining experience for the senses. The 2011 winner of the Boschendal Style Award has recently changed things up; here’s why Makaron deserves its nomination this year.

The space

Forming part of the five-star boutique hotel Majeka House in Stellenbosch, this restaurant is a touchstone of South African style and cuisine. Makaron’s inspiring interiors lead out onto a sleek and sunny terrace, creating the perfect setting for a relaxed yet stylish dining experience.

The finer details

Interior designer Etienne Hanekom is the creative brain behind the décor of both the restaurant and hotel. The interiors are elegant with a modern twist, featuring custom-designed copper-top dining tables by James Mudge and Louis Ghost chairs. Sleek wooden floors and a wood-panelled fireplace create warmth to contrast with the cool white walls. Beautiful vintage crockery ties the look together.

The sun-dappled terrace has an eclectic style: dotted with bright cacti and dressed in pops of blue and green, the al fresco setting is a breath of fresh air that’s ideal for summer feasting.

Etienne was also tasked with injecting some innovation into Makaron’s new kitchen to inspire culinary genius in this traditionally practical space. New York subway-style tiles line the walls in charcoal grey, olive-green and cream, and a linear window between the kitchen and restaurant allows diners a glimpse into the pastry- and cold-starter stations.

Also forming part of the glossy new kitchen is the marble-topped table for two that gives diners front-row seats to a gastronomic theatre. The lucky couple that nabs those seats will be able to observe all the action during a typical dinner service.

The cuisine

Passionate and well-travelled chef Tanja Kruger is known for her whimsical and elegant dishes. Her signature dish is the delicately plated starter of ancient grains, served with a silken cauliflower velouté and dainty shavings of courgette and romanesco broccoli.

Does Makaron have what it takes to win the 2015 Boschendal Style Award? We’ll find out at the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards on 15 November. Stay tuned to see our other nominees.
