5 great bakeries for golden cronuts in SA

While some might have thought this was just a phase, the glorious croissant-doughnut hybrid that is the cronut is clearly here to stay. This wondrous creation originated in New York City thanks to acclaimed pastry chef Dominique Ansel and is essentially a deep-fried ring of croissant-like dough. While the layers of buttery pastry are perfect on their own, patisseries and cafés all over are filling them with custards and ganache, and topping them with plenty of OTT sweet confections. For your #Fridayfeels, here are five spots for glorious cronuts in South Africa.

Coimbra Bakery (Claremont, Cape Town)

This Southern Suburbs bakery has been keeping locals happy with legendary baked goodies and good coffee for years. The fresh cronuts here always create a stir in flavours of cinnamon sugar, chocolate, white icing with cranberries, and Nutella cream with custard.

Jason Bakery
(City Bowl, Cape Town)

Cronuts conjured up by Bree Street’s pastry king Jason Lilley have become famous in Cape Town. His ‘doughssants’ are available on Saturdays only, and a new flavour is debuted each week. Past flavours have included citrus with cardamom crème and citrus curd; Persian carrot cake with carrot cake mousse filling and saffron cream-cheese topping; matcha and white chocolate mousse; and gypsy tart with caramel and crème fraîche.

Old Town Italy
(Menlyn, Pretoria)

This Italian-style eatery offers decadent freshly baked goods daily. Head straight to the pastry counter to grab your stash of bite-size cronuts. The flavours constantly change but will feature anything from chocolate-rich Bar One or Nutella and banana to banoffee pie, fiery ginger bread, or cheeky chocolate brownie.

Remo’s Villagio (Umhlanga Rocks, Durban)

The Remo’s team was the first to bring cronuts to KZN shores. Their version of these dainty treats are home-made daily and come with vanilla custard filling and crunchy cinnamon-sugar coating. The toppings and flavours vary, with options like peanut butter, banana and caramel, pecan nut and chocolate, chocolate orange, and marshmallow and KitKat.

XO Patisserie (Melville, Johannesburg)

This 27 Boxes patisserie is on top of food trends with its freakshakes and cronut creations. The cronuts are served warm and soft with a sweet, creamy filling. A dusting of crunchy cinnamon and sugar or nuts on the outside makes for the perfect bite. As for the variations, look out for chocolate hazelnut, lemon mint, cinnamon buttercream, salted caramel and Oreo and cream. Our favourite twist on the theme, however, is the cronut-topped freakshake, which comprises a double-thick stracciatella or coffee-and-chocolate Sicilian gelato shake topped with one of the golden pastry treats.
