5 great bakeries in Joburg

Brought to you by

There’s nothing quite like breaking into a fresh loaf of bread, slicing the first slice of a beautiful cake or savouring a mouthful of macaron. Whether you’re looking for rye bread, milk tarts or a scrumptious, buttery croissant, this list of Jozi’s best bakeries has you covered.

Black Forest Bakery (Braamfontein and Sandton)

This family-run traditional German bakery has been one of the best-kept secrets in Joburg. An unassuming storefront in Braamfontein leads into a space brimming with baskets of arguably the best rye bread in town. Cakes, tarts and a variety of other sweet and savoury treats are sure to tempt you, too.

Just Teddy (Hyde Park)

Situated in Hyde Park, the business has become a family affair – Teddy, the store’s namesake and The Great South African Bake Off finalist, whips up his signature baked goods. His son Jeffrey bakes the bread, while daughter Jordyne creates the most stunning pastries.

Oregano (Linden)

This boutique caterer and patisserie’s doors open to reveal what some may call the best milk tarts in SA. Decadently creamy and perfectly seasoned, the single treat alone is worth the trip to leafy Linden. Once you’re there, though, you’d be totally justified in trying out the cakes, cinnamon rolls and a host of other glorious baked goods.

The Patisserie (Illovo)

The Patisserie is a pink-and-white striped Parisian wonderland tucked away in Illovo’s recently refurbished post office centre. The chic French-style restaurant and patisserie is the perfect place to indulge in decadent cakes, lemon sponge loaves, mille-feuille slices and macarons in every colour. There’s also a small menu of gorgeous breakfasts, pies and pastries.

PAUL South Africa (Melrose North)

As a purveyor of fine French patisserie since 1889, PAUL knows it way around the pastry kitchen. Buttery layered croissants, pain au chocolat and creamy éclairs will have you filled with joie de vivre.
