Whether you’re sipping on your favourite craft brew or enjoying a familiar icy draught, gourmet pub fare is the ultimate pairing for beer. Luckily there are plenty of trendy beer bars and eateries serving up all kinds of beer and food combos and specials. From cheesy pizza to a meaty burger, head to one of these five spots for a cleansing ale and a plate of tasty pub grub.

Beerhouse (Fourways, Johannesburg and Long Street, Cape Town)

This dedicated beer bar has got weekly lunches covered with a daily weekday lunch special featuring interesting new dishes and a refreshing beer of your choice. For only R50, the midweek lunch special includes a 350ml draught or soft drink and gourmet pub rub offerings such as grilled hake rarebit with citrus rice and pea purée, chilli beef crostini with a side salad, or crumbed chicken goujons with spicy remoulade and crispy potato skins.

The Taproom at Devil’s Peak Brewing Company (Salt River, Cape Town)

Kick your week off with The Taproom’s Make Up Mondays and their half-price menu. Sip on your favourite Devil’s Peak brew such as the lager and pale ale for only R16 and tuck in to bar snacks, mains and desserts for half their usual price. On Tuesdays, the team also run a burger and beer special where you can enjoy their famous cheeseburger and a First Light Golden Ale or DPBC Lager for R55.

Forkies Real Food Parlour (Lynnwood, Pretoria)

To lift the spirits on a blue Monday, this laid back but buzzing eatery offers a Mexican-themed beer and pizza special, called Margarita Mondays. For only R69, customers can get their hands on a cheesy thin-based margarita pizza and an ice-cold Corona beer with a slice of lemon.

Hudsons The Burger Joint (Stellenbosch)

Weekdays have never looked better with this buzzing burger joint offering half-price beers and appetisers from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Sip on beers such as Jack Black draught, CBC Amber Weiss, Woodstock Happy Pills, and Darling Bone Crusher. Tuck in to appetisers such as the Bacon wrapped poppers with blue cheese mayo, crumbed mushrooms with sweet chilli sauce, or mac ‘n cheese croquettes with truffle mayo.

Republik (Durban North, Durban)

On Monday evenings (and all day on public holidays), Durban’s trendy burger, beer and wine bar offers a killer special. For just R80 you can sip on a Jack Black or Devil’s Peak draught and tuck into a delicious cheddar cheese burger. Choose from a 180g free-range beef patty, a succulent chicken breast, or a veggie patty.
