5 great bunny chows in Durban

There are certain South African cuisines that are best prepared and enjoyed in a particular place – think gatsbys in Cape Town or kotas in Gauteng townships. For Durban, it’s the famous bunny chow: half of a loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with one of a variety of tasty curries. These are five must-try bunny chow spots in Durban.

Cane Cutters (Glenwood and Umhlanga)

Expect authentic Indian cuisine from this Durban-style curry restaurant situated in Glenwood (and at the recently opened Umhlanga branch). Cane Cutters offers a selection of bunnies, with the option to order either a quarter or half loaves from the traditional or speciality sections of the menu. Try the quarter mutton for R64.90, the speciality trotters and beans for R69.90, or the pricier prawn curry for R99.90.

Capsicum Restaurant (Britannia Hotel)

Established in 2001 at Britannia Hotel, Capsicum Restaurant has become a popular spot for both locals and seasonal tourists. Go for the famous traditional mutton bunny chow for R68 or the boneless mutton for R110. Other interesting options include the trotters (R79), tripe (R79), or mince (R98) bunnies.

Impulse by the Sea (Tinley Manor Beach)

No bunny chow is complete without a tasty, perfectly-seasoned curry and the curry from this family-run restaurant on the Durban North Coast is so good that it has become the go-to reference for curry-book authors. It’s been featured in Erica Platter, Clinton Friedman and Devi Sankaree Govender’s Durban Curry, So Much of Flavour, as well as award-winning journalist Ishay Govender-Ypma’s book named Curry: Stories & Recipes across South Africa. Try the lamb (R120), prawn or bean bunnies (R45), though a special mention must also go to the highly recommended chef’s signature prawn curry.

The bunnies can be bought as quarter, half or full loaves. Tuck into the quarter chicken for R54.95, mutton for R64.95 or the kebab for R63.95.

Oriental Restaurant (The Workshop, Durban Central)

Look forward to a small section of flavourful quarter bunnies served with salad, sambals and pickles. The bunny chow options include mutton, chicken, vegetable, bean and kebab (from R59.95 to R79.95).
