5 great happy hour specials in Cape Town

We love a good happy hour and in Cape Town, the cocktail specials are abundant. From two-for-one deals to half-price specials with a few tasty snacks in between, we’ve hunted down five great spots to grab affordable mojitos or icy draughts to wind down after the workweek.

Bootlegger Coffee Company (Kenilworth and Sea Point)
Head to their Southern Suburbs or Sea Point Main Road branches to enjoy half-price beer and cocktails between 4:30pm and 6:30pm daily, which works out to R30 a cocktail. Deliciously refreshing options include Raspberry Fizz (vanilla vodka, Chambord, lemons and soda), a classic margarita, or Mai Tai (orange and pineapple juice, white and dark rum, amaretto and grenadine). Beer offerings include CBC’s Lager and Amber Weiss as well as their bottled brews. To soak it all up, a tapas menu is available from 4pm with moreish bites like fish pops with lemon aioli or the grilled-to-perfection pork ribs.

Door 221 (City Bowl)
At Bree Street’s stylish dive bar, guests can quench their thirst with two cocktails for R50 from 6pm to 7pm every night they’re open. (Which for the time being is Tuesday to Saturday. Opening hours are scheduled to expand in December.) Sip on options such as the Dark and Stormy with Jamaican Appleton VX Rum, ginger, limes and bitters, or an ice-cold mojito with fresh mint. While you’re at it, tuck in to one of their tasty tacos with seared beef, spicy crema, kidney beans, roasted tomatoes and crumbled feta.

Clarke’s (City Bowl)
This popular diner-style eatery hosts happy hour from 5pm to 6pm on weekdays. Tipple choices include the Rocking Chair (Bell’s Whiskey with ginger beer and bitters over ice with mint), White Russians (Kahlua with house made vanilla Stolichnaya vodka and milk), double gin and tonics and double brandy and cokes for only R27 a pop. They also run an all-day shot and beer special for R26: with every Tafel, Black Label, Windhoek or Amstel bought, you will receive a shot of Jagermeister or El Jimador tequila for free. Pair this with their famous beef burgers with Underberger cheese or a rooster dog with sriracha and miso mayo.

Hudson’s Burger Joint (Claremont, Gardens, Green Point and Stellenbosch)
Weekdays have never looked better with this buzzing burger joint offering half price cocktails, beers and appetisers from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Their larger-than-life cocktails are the perfect way to end the day. For something fruity, try the strawberry or granadilla daiquiri and for those wanting an extra kick, there’s the popular frozen margarita, which is served in one litre jugs. Tuck in to appetisers such as the triple cheese chilli poppers, crumbed mushrooms, or crispy hard-shell tacos.

Quaglino’s (Mouille Point)
Celebrating their newly acquired liquor license, this sea-facing restaurant is now offering an after-work perk special. Guests can sip on craft beers and cocktails at half-price from 5pm to 7pm on weekdays while the resident house DJ plays jazzy tunes. Cocktails include short drinks, martinis, long drinks and frozen options. Prices range from R55 to R70 normally, so expect to pay between R28.50 and R35 during happy hour. For something a little different, try the Smokey Seth with Jack Daniels, maple syrup, bitters and chef’s bacon infused foam. After working up an appetite, settle in for a delicious dinner with options such as their deep-fried baby squid stuffed with tomato, pine nuts and chorizo, or their beef sliders with caramelised onion and aioli.
