5 great OTT breakfasts in Cape Town

Breakfast doesn’t always have to be cardboard-like cereal or simple peanut butter on toast. If you like your French toast with a towering side of bacon or prefer your eggs slathered in something buttery and sandwiched between two buns, this list is for you. These Mother City eateries are plating up pure indulgence with OTT brekkies that hold nothing back.

The breakfast bagel at Kleinsky’s (Sea Point)

If bagels are your breakfast of choice, this New York-style deli in Sea Point will hit the spot. The famed bun is stuffed with all your comfort-eating needs: house-cured lamb bacon, melted cheddar cheese, a perfectly fried egg and tomato. If you’re a vegetarian, go for some avo in place of the lamb bacon. Best served with a Bloody Mary elixir (vodka, tomato juice, pickle brine, horseradish and Tabasco).

The croissant French toast at Clarke’s (City bowl)

Forget plain old bread – Clarke’s kicks French toast up to high gear with a sticky and golden croissant French toast creation. The egg-soaked croissant is filled with Nutella and accompanied by bourbon bananas, fresh fruit and bacon. There’s also a sprinkling of icing sugar for good measure. Top it with a generous dousing of maple syrup.

The cornflake-crusted French toast at Mulberry & Prince (City bowl)

You can only get your brunch fix on a Sunday at this stylish city bowl eatery. The menu focuses on all things indulgent with an American slant. Everything on the menu screams OTT (hello, fried chicken and waffles), but the real treat here is the cornflake-crusted French toast. Fresh brioche bread is soaked in an eggy mix with a warm dusting of cinnamon before being adorned with that nostalgic crunch of cornflakes. The thick-cut bread is then fried up and topped off with icing sugar, fresh berries and maple syrup. If you’re feeling extra hungry, get a side portion of bacon.

The egg slutt at Jason Bakery (City bowl)

Not for the faint-hearted, Jason’s breakfasts come with an extra serving of decadence with options like custard-filled croissants, flapjack stacks and breakfast pizza on the menu. The egg slutt – a take on the breakfast bun made famous in LA – comes in the form of a golden croissant encasing softly scrambled eggs, melting Colby cheddar, caramelised onions, chives and Sriracha mayo. It’s messy, comforting and so delicious.

The pancakes a L’Americana at Giulio’s Café (City bowl) ?

Get your flapjack fix with a choice of three different toppings at this pretty little corner café. The fluffy and thick flapjacks are stacked and there’s no skimping on toppings. Toppings include toffee-and-banana sauce with crispy bacon; sticky maple syrup with tart berries; or rich Nutella with flambéed bananas and strawberries. Pro tip: go with friends and order all three.
