5 iconic Cape Town restaurants for visitors

Brought to you by Cape Town Tourism

The Mother City is one of SA’s hottest holiday hubs, with visitors from all over making their way to its beautiful shores all year round. From restaurants with gorgeous views to gems serving delicious local flavours, here are five iconic restaurants to try around the city.

Chapman’s Peak Hotel Restaurant (Hout Bay)

Surf and turf is the name of the game at this Hout Bay landmark. The calamari here is legendary, as are the sunny sea views and cosy pub-style interiors, where fires roar in winter. It’s the perfect pit stop for checking out the area’s picturesque views.

Kalky’s (Kalk Bay)

This seaside fish shop is a favourite for locals and tourists. Head here for the classic pink prawns, great calamari, beer-battered fish, and vinegar-drenched slap-chips. Pro tip: Grab a takeaway and find a place to sit on the harbour wall, which overlooks the frolicking seals and False Bay.

La Colombe (Constantia Nek)

With chef Scot Kirton and team taking second place at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards, La Colombe should be on everybody’s bucket list. Views of Constantia Valley set the scene, paired with exquisitely executed dishes. Look forward to highlights such as poached West Coast oysters with pickled squid, seared scallops with char siu pork belly, and three ages of boerenkaas cheese with onion, rhubarb, walnut and cumin.

Mzoli’s (Gugulethu)

No Cape Town holiday would be complete without a visit to Mzoli’s. This township gem serves authentic shisa nyama (which literally means ‘burn the meat’ in Zulu). It’s a cultural trip for the senses and a great outing for serious meat lovers. Select your meat in the attached butchery then hand it over to the talented chefs, who cook it over the coals. Expect steak, chicken wings, lamb chops or boerewors marinated in a special sauce and braaied to perfection. Eat it with your hands, accompanied by pap, salads and delicious house chakalaka. As for the drinks, bring your own in a cooler box or buy them from the shebeen across the road.

The Test Kitchen (Woodstock)

The Test Kitchen still secures the spot of number one restaurant in the country, making it a truly special dining experience for any travelling foodie – but book in advance! The recently revamped restaurant – with its dark room and light room –plates up visually exciting dishes that are layered with beautiful textures, aromas and flavours, and can be paired with wine or tea. Past dishes include pork scratchings with a pint of Guinness, a Peking quail sandwich, the TTK Niçoise salad, and a 12-hour smoked trout tartare with home-made sour cream.
