5 places to indulge in decadent chocolate brownies

The thick, fudgy texture of chocolate brownies is one of life’s decadent joys. Lucky for us, there are so many tempting variations – from plain or studded with nuts to swirls of fruity flavours, chunks of white chocolate, and lashings of peanut butter. These gooey chocolate treats are irresistible at any time of day, served with a dollop of ice cream or a dusting of icing sugar. We’ve gone on a hunt for some of the most heavenly chocolate brownies around.

The General Store (City Bowl, Cape Town)

This Bree Street lunch spot is conveniently located across the road from Eat Out HQ and even more conveniently bakes up incredibly decadent brownies (R25) on a daily basis. These babies are perfectly dense and gooey and are made with 70% cocoa chocolate. Pistachio nuts, raspberry and salted caramel sometimes make an appearance, but its all about the chocolatey flavour and the slightly crisp top. These babies make for a perfect ending after enjoying one of their wholesome lunch options.

Harvey’s Restaurant (Umhlanga Rocks, Durban)

The Harvey’s Signature Chocolate Journey Designed for Two is as intense as it sounds. R118 gets you and a partner a plate that is soley dedicated to a calorific chocolate experience. The gooey brownies are made with an assortment of imported chocolates and are dotted with fudgy white chocolate chunks. The dish is also served with roasted white chocolate and lavender ice cream, home-made fortune cookies, milk chocolate and caramelised walnut mousse,  white chocolate and lime truffles, and a hot chocolate lava cup. Proceed with caution. 

Jam & Daisies (Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria)

This charming bakery and deli serves up double-chocolate hazelnut brownies (R20) made with an irresistible combination of dark chocolate buttons and cocoa. These completely decadent sqaures are also available for high tea parties and functions and are a delicious sweet treat with coffee or as a takeway after a scrumptious brunch.

The Leopard (Melville, Johannesburg)

This quirky Melville eatery serves classic dishes with exciting twists. Their mouth-watering homemade brownie offerings (R56 to R65) change constantly, with interesting combinitions such as chocolate and marzipan and their latest concotion of green fig, white chocolate and ginger. The tartness of the green fig is offset beautifully by the warming bite of ginger while the chunks of white chocolate add a familiar, comforting sweetness.

Yummi (Canal Walk and Stellenbosch)

These glorious 100% gluten- and wheat-free creations come in a range of flavours and are made with 72% cocoa fair trade couverture chocolate. Owner and passionate baker Eric Labuschagne whips up whimsical flavours such as white chocolate nougat, peanut butter mousse, and sacher torte brownies. There are also classic favourites such as the blondie brownie and the roasted macadamia nut version. The menu will also see some new flavours next week such as cookie dough, pepperment crisp tart and s’more brownies. These scrumptious treats are R19.50 for 80g and R30 for 120g.
