5 ingenious wine pairings in the Cape

While cheese and chocolate paired with wine will always remain matches made in heaven, wine’s flavour, aroma and mouthfeel actually complement a variety of sweet and savoury foods. From pizza pairings to crêpe cakes and MCC, here are five ingenious food-and-wine pairings around the Cape.

Cupcake-and-wine tasting at Delheim

For only R150, indulge in four decadent, freshly baked cupcakes, each paired with a special wine. Expect a next-level experience with an all-new twist of an evergreen favourite that puts the Cape’s famous Floral Kingdom and Delheim’s eco-friendly winemaking front-and-centre. The experience is available seven days a week between 9am and 4.30pm at Delheim’s tasting room. Call 0218884600 or email info@delheim.com to book.

Ice-cream-and-wine tasting at Clos Malverne

This extremely popular wine pairing sees seasonal homemade scoops paired with the estate’s popular wines. Expect ever-changing variations like cherry, mint and fudge ice cream paired with Clos Malverne Ellie MCC, white chocolate and five-spice ice cream with Clos Malverne Le Cafe, and even malva-pudding-and-custard ice cream with Clos Malverne Honey Dew. The tasting is R85 per person and includes five pairings. Booking is essential via info@closmalverne.co.za or 021 865 2022.

Mille crêpe cakes and bottomless bubbly at Localli

While this technically isn’t a pairing, we couldn’t leave this off the list. Cape Town’s new crêpe cake patisserie offers a day of bottomless bubbles and mille crêpe cakes for R200 a person. The events happen once a month with a different crêpe cake offering at each one. On 28 October, tuck into a variety of CocoaFair-flavoured crêpe cakes with flowing Steenberg MCC. To book, contact them on Facebook.

The pairings include the Grier Brut with honey-and-almond nougat containing cranberries, Villiera Tradition Brut with honey-and-macadamia nougat, Monro Brut with honey-and-almond nougat, and Tradition Brut Rosé with goji-berry-and-rooibos nougat. At Café Blanc de Noir you can tuck into a pizza divided into four parts, each garnished with a special topping and paired with a premium Brenaissance wine. Think biltong and fig toppings with the Queen of Hearts Merlot, and Knight of White Chardonnay with parma ham and rocket. The pairing costs R185 per person and is available Wednesdays to Sundays.
