6 must-try cheesy dishes in Joburg

Sweet dreams are made of cheese and we’re here to bring you Jozi’s finest dishes smothered in it.

Coalition Pizza (Rosebank)

This list wouldn’t be complete without a pizza, and Coalition is where you need to go for a classic Neapolitan-style creation. While there are numerous must-tries, you have to go for the classic margherita if it’s your first time here. It has the perfect balance of mozzarella, tomato and basil layered on two-day-proved pizza bases and wood-fired to perfection.

Cheese Gourmet (Linden)

A haven for the true cheese connoisseur, this little gem on a leafy Linden cornerside is the best place to go for your ultimate cheese fix. The table, which runs the length of the deli area, groans with the weight of many cheese wheels, blocks and wedges. Think creamy mozzarellas, numerous variations of emmenthal, Karoo crumbles and slightly sweet yet slightly salty boerenkaas. The café next door serves up a selection of cheese boards with an assortment from Cheese Gourmet; otherwise, shop to your heart’s content and take it home.

Marble by David Higgs (Rosebank)

Those looking for a more health-conscious cheesy indulgence need look no further than David Higgs’s Rosebank hot spot. While a salad may be the last thing you’d expect to find on a cheesiest dish list, the Caprese salad here most certainly qualifies. A gorgeous buratta ball sits atop a bed of tomato, avocado, rocket and basil, and is topped with smoked pesto. Once cut into, the buratta’s decadently delicious stracciatella filling spills out, creating a beautiful creamy dressing when mixed with the pesto.

Saint Restaurant (Sandton)?

The smoked provolone at Saint is arguably the cheesiest of cheesy dishes. A small cast iron dish arrives at the table bubbling with smoked provolone, a dash of chilli and a few cherry tomatoes. It’s served with an olive breadstick so you can scoop up the cheesy goodness.

Sumting Fresh (Norwood)

These food truck aficionados know a thing or two about bold flavours and interesting taste combinations. While they may be most well-known for their divine deep-fried chicken, one dish in particular makes the list. The gujon chicken comprises glorious chicken strips, skinny fries and slaw, covered in fine parmesan shavings. Finished with sweet chilli and aïoli, this is one cheesy dish that’ll have you coming back for more.

TJIPS (Eastgate)

This speciality chip shop – yes, it’s a whole shop dedicated to French fries – has a few cheese-laden options. The Oom Sam is the classic chilli cheese – the crispy on the outside and soft on the inside pommes frites are doused in their infamous fresh chilli-and-cheese topping.
