6 dog-friendly restaurants in Pretoria

What’s a great foodie experience without your best friend? These are the restaurants in Pretoria where you can dine with your pup.

Afro-boer (Die Wilgers)

The gardens here are filled with such beautiful rose bushes that you might want to spend all your time sniffing the flowers. All types of dogs are welcome, from handbag accessories who sit on laps to guide dogs and security-oriented observers. Leashes are a prerequisite, however. Dogs are made so welcome that staff love sneaking the odd rusk or meatball under the table – if the owners allow.

As Greek as it Gets (Cullinan)

Take a trip to Cullinan with the dog on the back seat or in the back of the bakkie. Owner Stavros Vladislavic is happy to welcome pets outside, where there’s ample seating on benches under umbrellas for shade, provided they’re on a leash and well-behaved.

Café Riche (CBD)

After a walk in the city’s parks, head for Church Square, where you and your pet can settle on Café Riche’s stoep to enjoy the splendor of period architecture. Animals with polite manners are welcome outside only.

La Madeleine (Lynnwood)

Father-and-daughter team Daniel and Anne Leusch run this very popular bistro on a large property with many large trees where parents, children and dogs can co-exist. The security guard, who keeps watch over the cars in the street, is happy to take dogs for a small walk so you can enjoy your meal in peace. Treat yourself to tasty churros served with homemade rum-and-raisin ice cream and a little jar of bitter chocolate sauce with raspberries – everyone will want to come back for more. Dogs are also given a complimentary bowl of water.

Prosopa (Waterkloof Heights) ?

? Available for online bookings on the Eat Out app.

Owner Dino Fagas is happy to allow any dogs in the beautiful outside area and small dogs inside the restaurant, as long as they’re supervised. Tuck into any of the delicious Mediterranean Greek-inspired mezze with your pup right next to you.

tashas (Brooklyn)

There’s often a queue of patrons waiting to get a table here. Dogs and other friendly pets are allowed to join their owners at the outside seating area, provided they’re under control. (Management prefers them not to be seated on the chairs, however.) Don’t be shy to ask for a bowl of water.
