Whether you’re a tourist visiting South Africa for the first time, or a local hankering after some perfect meat and laid-back vibes, here are seven of the best spots to find shisa nyama and braaied meat around South Africa.

aMadoda Braai (Woodstock)

Offering deep house, graffiti and freshly braaied meat, this is a jol for the young at heart. Tuck into a platter of chicken, wors, chops, pap and a roll, and watch the game on one of the large screens.

Backyard Grill (Sea Point)

Set in the centre of upmarket Sea Point, this is a more sedate braai option compared to some vibey shisa nyama spots – but the ribs are fall-off-the-bone excellent. Select your meat from the counter inside, and watch as it’s braaied in the courtyard down the side.

Chaf-Pozi (Soweto)

Situated at the Orlando Towers (where brave souls head for some inner-city bungee jumping), this hospitable spot serves up fresh braaied meat at communal tables that encourage interaction between tourists and locals.

Mash Braai House (Fourways)

This upmarket shisa nyama serves up dumplings, ribs, deboned skop (short for skaap kop, or sheep head), pap and chakalaka.

Mzoli’s (Gugulethu)

Popular with tourists and locals alike, this township shisa nyama often has queues out the door for its delicious meat, served without any frills – or cutlery! Order your meat in the attached butchery and hand it over to the braai masters, who will return it to you, perfectly cooked. Later on, a DJ gets going and the restaurant becomes a dance floor.

Rocket 88 (Lynnwood)

This is a popular spot for braai meat of the Afrikaans tradition. Think boerie rolls, roosterbrood and steak.

Soul Cafe (Strubens Valley)

While shisa nyama is easy to find in Joburg, the quality of the meat, seasoning and cooking at Soul Cafe sets it apart. Reasonable prices and occasional live music seal the deal. There’s karaoke on Thursdays.
