8 must-visit burger joints in Durban

Brought to you by

The east coast city is brimming with burger bars. Here’s where to order the best buns in the business.

D’Urban Burger Co. (around Durban)

It’s all about street-food burgers with a twist here. Chef Khutso Masethe’s idea is simple: Moroccan burgers on a panini bun. There’s a selection of beef, lamb and chicken burgers all topped with delicious coriander pesto, onion marmalade and hummus. There’s also a falafel version as a vegan option.

Republik (Morningside & Hillcrest)

This popular burger joint offers free-range burgers that are all made with 100% grass-fed beef. Build your own burger with toppings like jalapeño chutney, camembert, sriracha slaw and fried capers, or go for one of the signature burgers like the Jonathan’s lamb burger with chips, cheese and mutton gravy.

S43 (Morningside)

Set in the Station Drive precinct, this brewery offers a relaxed, stylish backdrop for craft beer and burgers. Chow down on the classic cheeseburger with tomato relish, the Durban burger with spiced pineapple and smokey bacon, or the Greek lamb burger with minted feta, roasted peppers and brinjal. There’s also the wildly popular crunch burger with southern fried chicken, slaw and pickles. All burgers are served with freshly cut potato chips, and buns can be swapped for brown mushrooms for an extra fee.

Savior Café (Glenwood)

While Savior is known for its stellar coffee, you can also stop in for a great burger. All are made from a bend of local beef cuts, seasoning and a secret barbecue sauce. The buns are served with a Mauritian slaw, salad and crispy fries. Get yours topped with options of mature cheddar, egg, mushrooms, avo or bacon. You can also get your hands on a falafel version.

Smokin’ Joes (Berea)

This funky burger joint serves up roadhouse-style and brasserie-style burgers. Opt for a classic like the Royale with cheese or go for the Tripswitch with three 65g beef patties, secret sauce, roasted tomatoes, cheese sauce and sriracha. There’s also the Nacho Libre with cheese sauce, nachos, peri-peri chicken strips and roasted tomatoes.

Super Burger (Morningside)

You’ll find this burger spot operating out of a souped-up Airstream on Florida Road. Expect some home-style patties with all your favourite toppings, including cheese, onion marmalade, pineapple, Big Korn Bites or jalapeños. You can also order your burger on a black or rainbow-hued bun. Make a meal of it and order a side of chicken strips and loaded fries.

Surf Riders (Addington Beach)

The glorious beach sets the scene for an array of gourmet burgers made using free-range, hormone-free and grass-fed beef. Options start with a basic version and move on to a bacon cheeseburger. The Habanero comes topped with guacamole, pineapple relish and habanero mayo, while the Camemburger combines melted camembert cheese with balsamic jam and berry relish. The vegetarian Shroom burger has a large brown mushroom as a patty substitute and is just as meaty as the rest. If you’re after something a little extra, add honey-glazed bacon to the mix. The fries, smothered in an addictive cheese sauce, are the perfect accompaniment.

Unity (Morningside)

This popular brasserie has a decent burger selection that’s best washed down with one of the local craft beers. Sink your teeth into a standard Midlands beef burger with tomato, pickles, lettuce and mayo, or take it to the next level with the combo of bacon, avo and feta, or gorgonzola, onion marmalade and rocket. There’s also the Mexican burger for those looking for a little heat. It’s topped with cheddar, guacamole, sour cream, jalapeños and tomato salsa. There are also three chicken burgers from which to choose and a veg burger with a chickpea-and-feta patty.
