Atlanta, USA, has its own South African foodie scene

A South African restaurateur based in Georgia, USA, has made a name for lekker local cuisine in the city of Atlanta. Justin Anthony owns two eateries, 10 Degrees South (the first South African restaurant in the United States), and the spin-off tapas restaurant, Yebo, with two more in the works. We got in touch with Justin to find out more.

The two new restaurants, Biltong Bar and Cape Dutch, are set to open in Atlanta within the next year. Biltong Bar is a concept a few years in the making. Due to the popularity of the dried spiced meat they make and serve at 10 Degrees South and Yebo, Justin and his team wanted to expand on that and bring it to a larger audience.

The bar will open up in a new culinary development called Ponce City Market that’s the talk of the foodie scene in the USA at the moment. “We’re very excited to have South African cuisine in the mix,” says Justin. “It will have a dine-in, take-away and retail component, where we will sell biltong, pies, peri-peri sauce, spices and South African drinks.” The second new restaurant in his repertoire will be named Cape Dutch, the inspiration for which came earlier this year while Justin was visiting the Winelands. “We spent the afternoon with Ken Forrester at his home and winery, braaiing steaks and vegetables, and drinking great wine, of course. I wanted to recreate a similar experience in a dining room setting and bring the braai concept indoors,” he explains. The team was lucky enough to secure a sought-after space in the city where they will set up a braai in the middle of the elegant dining room.

If you make it to Atlanta, let us know what you thought of Justin’s proudly SA eateries!
