The best steakhouses in the Western Cape

Tramontina-blue-logo
From rump to rib-eye, dry to wet-aged, on or off the bone – here’s a list of restaurants serving the best steaks in the Western Cape.

This selection comprises all the steakhouses that made the cut for the 2019 Eat Out 500, the list of the best restaurants in the country as rated and reviewed by our panel of critics for the 2019 edition of Eat Out magazine (on sale now). But we know the Western Cape is crammed with more great steakhouses that didn’t crack the nod. Please tell us about your favourites in the comments section at the end!

Cape Town

Brad’s Grill (Claremont)
This southern suburbs hidden gem is only open at night. Start off with Brad’s deliciously spicy buffalo chicken, followed by either the 200g skinny steak with a side salad or opt for the 250g award-winning pepper fillet steak.

The Butcher Shop & Grill (Mouille Point)
This is the go-to spot to enjoy quality meat while taking in the beautiful views of the Mouille Point promenade. Highlights include the creamy chicken liver starters, signature steaks (like the perfectly cooked and seasoned sirloin on the bone), or the juicy classic fillet with a garden salad.

Carne on Kloof (Gardens) ?
This Italian-style steakhouse offers an outstanding experience for hardcore meat-lovers. Carne is known for its signature rare cuts – try the picanha rump with salsa verde and a side of thin-cut fries.

Available for online bookings on the Eat Out app.

Carne SA (City Bowl) ?
Italian chef Giorgio Nava is known for serving quality meat at his various Carne restaurants. Start with the tasty trio of beef tartare served with briny anchovies and sparkling salsa verde. The ravioli of Karoo lamb shoulder, served with burnt sage butter, is another standout favourite.

Available for online bookings on the Eat Out app.

Cattle Baron Steak Ranch (Constantia)
Cattle Baron is known for its meat, so that will be the obvious place to start. Pick a meaty main from the usual steak cuts of rump, sirloin and fillet; or opt for lamb chops, beef or pork ribs, prime ribs and T-bone. There are also signature dishes, such as chateaubriand or Madagascan pepper fillet, if you feel like something different.

Cattle Baron Steak Ranch (Durbanville)
It’s steak all the way here, with a small choice of chicken, seafood and vegetarian options. A highlight from the section called ‘Steak that made us famous’ is the 300g sirloin Nevada topped with bacon, avocado, camembert and onions. Meat on the bone includes ribs; while traditional rump, sirloin and fillet are cooked to your liking.

Don Armando (Green Point)
This Argentinian steakhouse specialises in authentic grilled meat. Don Armando prides itself in having the best cuts of aged meat prepared to perfection. Share the signature 800g picanha steak served with hand-cut potato chips, chimichurri sauce and a crisp house salad with balsamic dressing.

Hoghouse Brewing Company (Ndabeni)
Head to Hoghouse Brewing Company for good old authentic barbecue. Look forward to the tender sticky pork ribs prepared using the ‘low and slow’ cooking style. Finish off with the famous pasteis de nata dessert.

The Hussar Grill (Camps Bay)
Steaks are the focus here, so you can expect to find familiar steakhouse specialities with portion size and cuts to fit your specific carnivore needs. Try the popular carpetbagger steak with smoked mussels and cheese filling, or the chateaubriand topped with brandy and flambéed. It comes served with béarnaise sauce on the side.

The Hussar Grill (Mouille Point)
The chateaubriand is obviously a popular choice at The Hussar Grill, but if you’re not in a meaty mood then you’ll want to try something different, opt for the delicious mussel pot, made using plump mussels in a herb, wine and cream sauce.

The Hussar Grill (Willowbridge)
The Hussar Grill is famous for its meat but they also have other delicious offerings. The chicken livers – sautéed in sherry, garlic, onions, mixed herbs and cream, or peri-peri and served with croutes – are a great start. Follow that up with kingklip, calamari or salmon options from the seafood section, or a chicken roulade with mushroom sauce.

Rare Grill (Kenilworth)
Winner of the steakhouse category in the Western Cape at the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries.

The selection at this award-winning restaurant may be small (with the only options being aged rump, sirloin and fillet), but the steaks are expertly grilled; fat-rendered, but still rare and with enough flavour to dispense the sauce.
