Beyond our borders: Wapping good food

Brainchild of Australian-born theatre director Jules Wright, The Wapping Project based in an old hydraulic power station in Londons gritty but cool east end, has been at the forefront of the citys contemporary arts scene since 1984.

Now its making waves with Wapping Food – a cutting edge restaurant space that has been set up in the engine and turbine houses of the station, located on the banks of the Thames.

Diners sit between the original brickwork and heavy duty machinery whilst feasting on hearty meals such as roast butternut squash with buffalo mozzarella, radicchio and sage, baked pancetta-wrapped figs with walnuts and gorgonzola or roast lamb with parsnip and potato gratin, and anchovy and rosemary parfait, against a backdrop of dramatic artworks and performance pieces.

An innovative Eating Together-menu is also available for groups of 9 or more, with freshly baked loaves of bread, lentil and root vegetable soup with seasoned yoghurt, red wine poached pear and rice brûlée with clotted cream, and pan forte.

Like the artists who perform and exhibit here on a regular basis, the chefs are also often commissioned to make daily menu changes.
