2011 Boschendal Style Award nominee: Overture

Set on the spectacular Hidden Valley Wine Estate, Overture is an elegant, yet relaxed restaurant, where the food of head chef Bertus Basson shines. The mood: Open, airy and sporting lush greenery, Overture offers a casual dining space that still delivers on elegance. The designer: “The inspiration was to build the site rather than build on the site,” says Jane Visser of Jane Visser Mark Thomas Architects, who are responsible for the wine cellar and restaurant structure. With its mixture of rustic stone, steelwork and glass, the design makes a contemporary statement without negatively impacting on the surroundings. The details: The restaurant interior has recently evolved under the guiding hand of Bertus and – like the ponytailed head chef himself – it offers the full fine dining experience without the pomp and pretension. They’ve recently had new chairs custom-made for comfort, and added two paintings by Richard Scott. The food: Bertus’s meals are all about simplicity, natural flavours and great ingredients. A seasonal menu boasts all the classics like terrines, confit, risotto and entrecôte. Does Overture have what it takes to win the Boschendal Style Award at the Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards?
