Boschendal Style Award nominee: Overture

Situated on the Hidden Valley Wine Estate, Overture pairs unparalleled views with spectacular food, without taking on any airs and graces.

The restaurant:
With chef Bertus Basson at the helm, Overture has made its way into the top 10 for the past four years, and cracked the nominee list again this year. Echoing the chef’s personality, food is relaxed and unfussy, but not shy on flavour.

The food:
Bertus’s current fascination is smoking and cooking over an open fire – thanks, in part, to his brand new custom-built smoker. The menu is constantly changing, but it features simple knockout flavours like smoked hake with saffron and crispy squid.

The x-factor:
Style is not just about getting the glassware and the cutlery gleaming, it’s about making the experience enjoyable for the diners. With the global trend moving towards fun, rather than fine, dining, Overture scores points for their relaxed, no-nonsense atmosphere, where food can take centre stage.

The structure was designed by Jane Visser of Jane Visser Mark Thomas Architects to make the most of a breathtaking view out over the vineyards.

Recently, the interior has had a new lick of paint and Bertus has dispensed with the table linen in favour of tables. Made of solid oak, smoked to create a dark, moody surface, they were built by Bertus’s carpenter brother Johan Basson, of Bespoke Joinery. On the subject of the new look, Bertus is characteristically modest: “We literally just drank too much whisky one night and designed these tables.” There’s nothing like a little liquid inspiration, it seems.
