Brand new restaurant, The Stack, on fire

Twitter and Instagram users shared dramatic pictures this afternoon as a fire flared up in the Cape Town city bowl.

Josiah Dumse of Oranje Kloof CID spoke to us from the scene, reporting that the fire was on the corner of Weltevreden, Morkel and Union Streets. The new restaurant next door to the Lady Hamilton Hotel – The Stack – had been burning, he said. There were thankfully no injuries.

It’s unclear at this stage how much damage the hotel and restaurant sustained inside, but photos from the scene show the roof almost wholly burnt off. The immediate area around the fire is currently closed to traffic and fire trucks are attending.

The Stack opened just last week after a grand scale renovation of historic building Leinster Hall.

Update 7.56pm
Owners Nigel Pace and Sarah Ord have issued the following statement:

“We confirm that a fire broke out at 3.30pm today causing significant damage to this historic building. We are grateful to report that there have been no injuries to either staff or guests. While devastated by the damage, we wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Cape Town Fire Fighters and Volunteer Wildfire Services for their quick response and dedication to getting the blaze under control. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown and investigations will begin immediately. Builders will return to the site tomorrow morning with the aim of opening The Stack as soon as possible. Members of the public are encouraged to keep an eye on The Stack’s social media channels for more updates and news.”

Eat Out’s thoughts are with the team as they rebuild.
