Cape Town’s greatest bakeries

Brought to you by

Whether you consider yourself a pastry purist, devote your weekend mornings to buying freshly baked sourdough, or just love a good slice of cake, these Cape Town bakeries have got you covered with the best buns in the business.

Bentlys Bread Co. (Sea Point)

This Sea Point bakery is a go-to for freshly baked artisanal bread. They also offer a variety of sweet and savoury treats like their famous boiled bagel with fresh salmon, herbed cream cheese, capers and rocket; goats cheese, bacon and caramelised onion quiche; as well as delicious cakes, muffins and brownies.

Charly’s Bakery (Zonnebloem)

This brightly coloured bakery has become renowned for its wacky and whimsical bakes, including colourful Instagrammable cupcakes (think unicorn and flamingo) and decadent chocolate-fudge brownies. These beauties are smothered in brownie sauce for an extra touch of indulgence. They also do real-deal red velvet cupcakes made with beetroot. Vegans can even treat themselves to a vegan version, or to chocolate and coconut cupcakes with coconut cream ganache.

Coco Safar (Sea Point)

This stylish patisserie and coffee bar is known for its exceptional baked treats that tempt passersby from the pastry counter. The croissants are flaky and golden and the miniature poppy seed madeleines that are served with their coffee are perfection. If you’re after something savoury, try a flaky cheese stick drizzled in a rooibos mustard.

Dinkel Bakery (Tamboerskloof)

This cosy German spot on Kloof Nek is a great place to stock up on bakes for breakfast or lunch. Buttery croissants, pain au chocolat and the famed spelt croissants are what keep locals coming back. The flaky golden croissants sell out quickly, so arrive before 11am to get your fix. The bakery also does 100% spelt breads and rolls. Come summer season, the team will be baking up German classics like franzbrötchen, and they also host gingerbread house workshops.

The Foodbarn Deli & Tapas Bar (Noordhoek)

Locals and tourists can look forward to the highly recommended pies from The Foodbarn Deli & Tapas Bar. They include a variety of fillings like braised pork and red wine, steak or classic chicken and mushroom. Other delicious baked goods include croissants, muffins and quiche.

Four&Twenty (Wynberg)

While its inventive and indulgent brunches are excellent, this Wynberg spot also receives plenty of locals visiting for its popular baked goods. The number one best-seller since Four&Twenty has opened has been the caramel and toasted macadamia nut baked cheesecake. Coming in second is the gluten-free peanut butter brownie. There’s also the sweet ‘Shutupyourface’ sandwich, featuring ever-changing flavour combinations like coconut biscuit sandwiched with chocolate cake, caramel and peppermint mousse, and marshmallow crème with toasted coconut flakes. Vegans are also looked after with a cocoa-choco-berry fudge bar, which has become a hit at the pastry counter. To avoid missing out on your favourite treat, get here early on a Saturday or Sunday and enjoy a lazy afternoon tea. If you want to order a large cake or tart to take home (which is recommended), be sure to order 24 hours in advance.

Hoghouse (Ndabeni)

The pasteis de nata needs no introduction here. This brewery, barbecue and bakery has become famous for these little morsels, which are made with homemade pastry and only the best ingredients. The Ndabeni bakery is getting a facelift, but its hole-in the-wall Coffee & Pasteis Hatch will keep the pasteis coming, in addition to almond croissants, Valrhona chocolate brownies, financiers, macaroons, cookies, mini cakes and ‘brekkie-on-the-go’ eggy nests. There are also sourdough and potato breads available to order and collect on Thursdays. If you can’t get to the restaurant, the pasteis are also available at the OZCF market every Saturday, where they sell out every week.

Jason Bakery (City Bowl and Green Point)

Cape Town’s bread-and-pastry king continues to up his baking game at his two extremely popular Cape Town bakeries (with a third bakery set to open on Buitenkant Street). The Bree Street sourdough is a must to take home, while on Saturdays the famous doughssants fly out of the bakery in flavours like TimTam, Oreo and Canadian pecan-nut pie. Top tip: Jason posts doughssant teasers throughout the week leading up to Saturday. You can pre-order your doughssant on a Friday to ensure you don’t miss out on that week’s indulgent flavour. If all else fails, you can curb your cravings with doughnuts, carrot cake cheesecake, pasteis de nata, white chocolate-filled croissants and marshmallow choc-chip cookies.

Martin’s Bakery (Diep River)

This southern suburbs gem serves up homely café-style food, breads and pastries baked on site. The golden pies are a hit, as are the 12 different types of bread including carb-free, foccacia and sweet potato bread. There are also daily savoury tarts, quiche, flaky croissants and a variety of cakes available on the baked goods table. Vegan treats on offer include nutty chocolate brownies that are great accompaniments for those almond milk lattes.

Olympia (Kalk Bay)

This quaint sidewalk bakery offers great breads, pastries and cakes with a side of sea views. Go for the freshly baked (and still-warm) croissants with a good cup of coffee. If you’re here for breakfast, grab a table early to avoid disappointment – Olympia is packed on the weekend.

Ou Meul Bakkery (City Bowl)

Early birds and worker bees enjoy a strong cup of coffee, warm croissants and freshly baked pies straight out of the oven at this Long Street bakery. The famous Riviersonderend pie is the top seller, with perfectly flaky cases filled with the likes of coriander chicken, mutton, or spinach and feta. You can also grab a loaf of sourdough, breadsticks, or a slice of moist carrot cake to take home.

Pajamas & Jam Eatery (Strand)

Great breakfasts and lunches are not the only highlights at this beautiful café. The freshly baked breads and cakes deserve a special mention of their own. The creations are so inventive and beautiful that singling out just one would be a sin here. Think large chocolate-topped meringues, toffee-and-pistachio cake, crunchy pain au chocolat, savoury tartlets, and some of the most glorious mini cheesecakes around. If you’re not distracted by the pretty pastries and cakes, the fresh breads available are also top notch.

Schoon (Stellenbosch)

Whether you’re visiting the Somerset West café, the Stellies bakery, or the tiny newly opened croissant hatch, Schoon won’t let you down when it comes to glorious baked goodies. Top sellers continue to be the pasteis de nata and croissants, both of which will please any purist. The Somerset West café churns out baguettes by the basket-load while the Stellies branch has garnered a following for its vanilla cheesecakes. If you’re visiting the croissant hatch, try one of the irresistible cream caramel cronuts or a croissant filled with pork and gruyère cheese.

Velvet Cake Co. (City Bowl)

This pastel-hued shop needs no introduction when it comes to cakes. City Bowl workers are known to frequent the bakery come 3pm to cure the afternoon office slump. You’ll be spoilt for choice, but take comfort in knowing that classic favourites like chocolate, red velvet and carrot cakes should always be available. Other delicious options include milk tart cupcakes, lemon meringue cake cups, and slices of hummingbird cake.
