Dedicated ceviche bar opens in Woodstock

Cape Town has more than its fair share of single-dish restaurants, with restaurants dedicated to everything from poké to ice-cream sandwiches. Now the Mother City has gained a new kind of single-dish eatery: a Peruvian-inspired ceviche bar located on Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock.

Tamryn Bruinders and Silwood-trained chef Dylan Norton are behind the new spot, called simply The Ceviche Bar. The duo first dreamt up the concept in October 2017 while catering at private events and markets – they most recently had a brief stint at Mojo Market in Sea Point. The keen response they got prompted the move to a more permanent space, which opened its doors on 2 March.

The simple menu, which changes every three to four months, features breakfast, ceviches (citrus-cured fish) and nikkei tiradito (Peruvian sashimi) inspired by South America, but made with seasonal South African ingredients.

Options include lime-cured salmon with cucumber, capers and a poached egg for breakfast; while lunch options include dishes like ceviche mango with lime-cured kingklip, mango and red chilli, or kingklip tiradito with sesame seed, pak choi and soya sauce.

Fish is sourced daily to create dishes that are as fresh and wholesome as possible, and the team also caters for vegan and vegetarian diners with a substitution of a variety of vegetables, including cured shiitake mushrooms with nectarine and lemon thyme.

The restaurant offers limited seating and a casual dining environment in order to cater to on-the-go locals. All dishes are also served in biodegradable packaging in an attempt to reduce water consumption during the drought.
