Where to find the best high tea in Jozi

In the mood for scones slathered in cream or tiny savoury treats? This is the list for you. We’ve lined up all the best afternoon, morning and high teas in Jozi so you can stick your pinky up in style.

Aurelia’s Restaurant at Emperors Palace (Kempton Park)

For a lavish high tea experience comprising a sweet buffet and a variety of savoury treats served to the table, Aurelia’s Restaurant is a must visit. High tea is offered on Saturdays between 2pm and 4pm and is priced at R245 per adult and R120 for children aged 6–12 years. The high tea menu includes spring rolls, mini cutlets, wings and cupcakes, and changes on a weekly basis. The food is accompanied by hot beverages, juices and homemade iced tea. Special requests for halaal, vegan and gluten-free options can be placed at the time of booking. Reservations are essential and need to be made at least a week prior, especially during the festive season. Aurelia’s can seat 60 people under the current level 2 lockdown restrictions and outdoor seating is also available on the terrace, overlooking the D’Oreale Grande gardens, pool and fountain.

Dolci Café (Craighall Park)

This pastel haven with an adjoining outdoor area makes for a charming high tea location. Offered from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:30am and 3pm, Dolci’s high tea is priced at R235 per head. It includes 12 pieces of savoury and sweet bites such as quiches, milk tart and scones, paired with one non-alcoholic beverage. Vegetarian options are also available. Bookings need to be made 72 hours in advance with a 50% non-refundable deposit. Dolci Café can accommodate 125 people under the current lockdown restrictions.

Gabriella’s Tea Room (Parktown North)

If you’re on the lookout for a customisable high tea offering, Gabriella’s Tea Room is the place for you. Served from Tuesday to Sunday between 8am and 4pm, high tea costs R295 per head and includes five savoury and five sweet treats, plus tea or coffee and a non-alcoholic rosewater spritzer or virgin mint mojito as welcome drink. For kids, high tea costs R235 per head and includes a candy floss spritzer as a welcome drink. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available on request, as is a customisable menu. Alcohol can also be added on request at an extra cost. Gabriella’s is also known for its themed high tea parties. The venue can accommodate 30 people and outside seating is also available. Reservations need to be made 24 hours in advance and can be placed by calling 076 386 5578.

KCC ­– La Vie en Rose (Lower Houghton)

This garden venue is perfect for group gatherings for high tea with a plethora of options to choose from, across two menus. For R275 per head, you can choose from six sweet and five savoury items including cakes, scones, quiches, phyllo cups and filled sourdough baguettes. The second menu, priced at R320 per person, comprises four sweet and seven savoury treats, including a cheese and cold cuts platter. Both menus offer unlimited juices, teas and filter coffee. Alcohol is available at an extra cost. A discounted price is available for children under the age of eight years. A customisable vegan, gluten-free or lactose-free menu can be arranged with prior notice. The high tea is served buffet-style. La Vie en Rose can seat 150 people under current lockdown regulations and bookings must be made for a minimum of 15 people.

Level Four Restaurant at 54 on Bath (Rosebank)

For a traditional high tea served indoors in stylish settings or outdoors on the manicured garden terrace with picturesque views of Jozi, Level Four is the perfect choice. Afternoon tea is served daily between 2:30pm and 5pm and comprises three options: Traditional Tea priced at R290 per head, Royal Tea priced at R360 per head with a glass of Kir Royale on arrival, and Bubbles Tea priced at R420 per head with a glass of PJ Brut on arrival. All three options include a hot beverage or iced tea on arrival and unlimited sweet and savoury items including freshly cut sandwiches, baked scones and elegant pastries served on tea stands, accompanied by the 54 on Bath selection of premium loose leaf tea. Vegetarian options can be catered to at no extra cost, while vegan, gluten-free and lactose dietary requirements can be accommodated at an extra cost of R30. All special dietary requirements need to be pre-ordered. Each table can accommodate a maximum of 10 to 12 people and the restaurant has a total seating capacity of 30 people under current lockdown regulations. High tea at Level Four

Medeo Restaurant at The Palazzo Hotel (Fourways)

Premium high tea in an upmarket setting is yours to enjoy at Medeo Restaurant. Served from Monday to Sunday between 2pm and 4:30pm, high tea is priced at R340 per head and includes a selection of eight sweet and eight savoury items, served on a three-tiered tea stand, accompanied by TWG tea and fruit-infused water. Think strawberry custard choux pastry, lime cheesecake with gingerbread crust, hickory chicken and balsamic honey mustard pretzel, red onion marmalade, goat’s cheese quiche and more. The menu changes seasonally. Coffee, juices and alcohol can be ordered separately. Vegan and gluten-free dietary requests can be accommodated, if mentioned at the time of booking. The restaurant can accommodate 120 people under current lockdown restrictions and outdoor seating is also available on the terrace. Reservations must be made 48 hours in advance with full payment. The Piano Lounge at The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa (Sandhurst)

At The Piano Lounge, you can choose between Morning Tea (served from Monday to Saturday between 9:30am and 11:30am) and Afternoon Tea (served from Monday to Sunday between 1:30pm and 3pm. There are separate menus for each, as well as vegan and vegetarian menus, all of which change seasonally, and a special festive menu will be launched in December. Priced at R550 per person during the week and at R600 per person on weekends, high tea includes a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival, followed by six sweet and six savoury items such as finger sandwiches, tartlets, scones and assorted pastries, paired with a tea selection from the Ronnefeldt Teastar range. Specialty coffees are also available on request. The Piano Lounge is a halaal-friendly restaurant and gluten-free requests can also be accommodated, if placed in advance. On weekends, guests can enjoy live music by a pianist in the lounge. The restaurant can accommodate 20 people under current lockdown regulations and a maximum of six people per table. DaVinci Lounge at DaVinci Hotel and Suites (Sandton)

Every Saturday and Sunday, DaVinci Hotel and Suites at Nelson Mandela Square offers high tea in the DaVinci Lounge between 2pm and 5pm. High tea is priced at R355 per adult, which includes a welcome glass of sparkling wine or non-alcoholic bubbly, and R180 for children up to 12 years. Load up at the buffet, featuring vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, including salads, grilled chicken kebabs, sandwiches, and other savouries and sweet treats. To wash it all down, there’s a choice of tea, coffee, cappuccino or hot chocolate. Vegan and gluten-free requests can be accommodated by the chef, who will prepare items accordingly. The lounge can accommodate 40 people indoors, 30 people outdoors and another 50 people on the pool deck. Group bookings need to be made 24 hours in advance, along with pre-payment. Just Teddy Fine Boulangerie & Patisserie (Hyde Park)

Located in Hyde Park Shopping Centre, Just Teddy has become known for its classy high tea offering. Offered from Monday to Sunday between 11am and 4pm, high tea is priced at R250 per head. A kids’ menu is available on request. High tea is an elaborate affair here, with a three-tier stand comprising buttermilk scones, jams and preserves on the top tier, savoury vegetarian or non-vegetarian items in the middle tier, and French pastries and macarons on the bottom tray, which change on a daily basis. For vegetarians, the savoury option is a signature Lebanese mini mezze platter that includes dips like hummus, baba ghanoush and labneh, zaatar, falafel, dolmades, spinach pies and fried halloumi strips. The non-vegetarian savouries include chicken and mushroom and pepper steak pies and a roasted vegetable quiche. A pot of tea or filter coffee accompanies the snacks. Bookings need to be made a week in advance and the restaurant can seat 100 people under the current lockdown regulations. Amuse-Bouche at Fairlawns (Wendywood)

Savour high tea in an eclectic setting indoors or outside on the terrace at Amuse-Bouche. Served from Monday to Friday between 11am and 4pm, high tea is priced at R395 per person and includes a selection of eight savoury items and five sweet items, paired with a selection of teas. Juices, other hot beverages and alcohol can be ordered separately. Vegan, vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be accommodated, if requested at the time of booking. Reservations need to be made 48 hours in advance with full payment. Group bookings are accepted for a maximum of eight people and the restaurant can seat a maximum of 30 people currently. L’atelier Bakery (Rosebank)

A popular bakery hotspot in Jozi, L’atelier is known for its French-inspired high tea that’s offered from Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm and on Sunday and public holidays from 8:30am and 2pm. L’atelier offers four high tea options: the L’Atelier classic high tea priced at R300 per head, the meat high tea priced at R320 per head, the vegetarian high tea priced at R300 per head, and the gluten-free high tea priced at R350 per head. All four menu options are served on a tea stand with a selection of eight sweet and savoury items such as bagels, quiches, sandwiches, sliders, scones, brownies and macarons, accompanied by tea or coffee. The restaurant is halaal and vegan-friendly and special dietary requirements can be accommodated on request. The high tea menu changes thrice a year and the restaurant periodically runs special offers for its high tea offering. The Secret Tea Garden (Fourways)

Set in the beautiful garden venue of Norscot Manor, The Secret Tea Garden is the perfect spot for a quiet high tea under the trees. The restaurant offers “tea for two”, which is priced at R200 for two people and includes dainty sandwiches, cake, biscuits and scones served on a tiered tea stand and accompanied by tea or coffee. This offering is served throughout the day from Tuesday to Thursday between 9:30am and 4pm, from Wednesday to Friday between 10:30am and 5pm, and on Saturday and Sunday between 08:30am and 5pm. The restaurant also has three high tea options priced at R120, R195 and R275 with customisable sweet and savoury items plus tea, coffee and juices. The high tea needs to be booked three to four days in advance for a minimum of eight people and maximum of 100 people, with a 50% non-refundable deposit. Harpers Restaurant and Café (Eastgate)

Located in Eastgate Shopping Centre, Harper’s Restaurant offers high tea from Monday and Friday between 9am and 5pm and on weekends and public holidays from3pm to 6pm. High tea is priced at R280 per head during the week and R350 per head on weekends and public holidays. Children below 10 years of age can eat for free. High tea is served at the table and includes three to four sweet and three savoury items including mini pizzas, bruschettas, mini quiches, macarons, petit fours and assorted pastries, accompanied by filter coffee, cappuccino or a selection of teas. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free requirements need to be mentioned at the time of booking.
