The edgy new eatery is located at Johannesburg’s 1Fox Precinct in Ferreirasdorp and is housed inside the industrial-chic Mad Giant Brewery. Urbanologi operates side by side with the brewery, where the team brainstorms and tests new flavours, ingredients, processes and techniques. The inspiration of the cuisine at Urbanologi stems from using fresh Asian and local ingredients to create urban street food with an avant-garde twist.

Angelo and the brewing team make use of the built-in lab to experiment with yeast cultures, as well as brewery product development. The food menu is separated into sections including fried, kushiyaki (grilled skewered meats and vegetables), steamed, cured, frozen and raw. Exciting dishes include deep-fried potatoes with seaweed emulsion; plum-sake-flamed langoustine; apple- and jalapeño-cured tuna tataki; and heirloom tomato with oyster and horseradish snow. Visitors can wash it all down with wines from a list of interesting options all available by the glass, and craft beers from Mad Giant.

In keeping with the philosophy of their cuisine and to create a space that celebrates creative thinking, the Urbanologi team has collaborated with local artists, including interior designer Haldane Martin, graffiti artist Justin Nomad and ceramicist Mervyn Gers.

Urbanologi is taking bookings for lunch Monday to Sunday, and dinner Monday to Saturday.
