Former Rising Star to open new Strandveld eatery this spring

Fans of West Coast gem Oep ve Koep will be delighted to hear that its chef, Kobus van der Merwe (winner of the Nederburg Rising Star Award at the 2014 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards), will be opening his second restaurant, Wolfgat, at 10 Sampson Street in Paternoster this spring.

At the new eatery Kobus will continue to honour the indigenous offering of the region’s speciality fynbos, drawing inspiration from the area’s rich history in his cuisine. Wolfgat is named after an ancient cave dwelling in close proximity to the new restaurant, at which guests can look forward to beautiful views of the Paternoster bay. Kobus and the team are keeping mum about the finer details, but diners can anticipate a signature Strandveld tasting menu starring seasonal veldkos and seafood of the West Coast, a speciality for which Kobus has became well known.

Oep ve Koep and Die Winkel op Paternoster will continue to be run by the Van der Merwe family, and visitors can still enjoy the country store offering and light meals served in the charming garden.

Wolfgat is set to open in September; stay tuned to Eat Out for the official opening date.
