Warm up your winter with these cosy spots around Cape Town that serve up killer pies. From classic country-style chicken pies to decadent versions filled with unctuous lamb or mac and cheese, these places have got your comfort food cravings covered.

Café Frank (City Bowl)

This harvest-table restaurant is popular with the working lunch crowd. Check the daily menu to see which flavours and ingredients are being used for the day’s wholesome lunch offering. On the pie front, you can look forward to phyllo-wrapped fillings like roasted chicken and leek; lamb, pea and mint; beef and mushroom; and a wintery pork and red cabbage version. This southern suburbs neighbourhood joint serves up homely café-style food, breads and pastries baked on site. The popular golden pies are made with flaky shortcrust pastry. The selection includes fillings such as pepper steak, chicken and mushroom, spinach and mushroom, and bacon and egg.

This charming Bree Street bistro has become known for its hearty chicken pie. The filling is a rich chunky chicken gravy and the whole golden pie comes served with a truffle cream sauce. Pair it with triple-cooked chips or a simple side salad.
