Glory for Eikendal at Decanter World Wine Awards

Well-known Stellenbosch wine estate, Eikendal, excelled at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2008 in the UK, by winning one of only four gold medals awarded to a South African Sauvignon blanc.

Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2007 is described as having a crisp, greener taste appeal than some of its more tropical predecessors.

“The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, creating cooler pockets in the vineyards near Vredendal ensures slower ripening, resulting a natural acidity balance and terrific green flavours in the berries. The introduction of the typical coastal, minerality and a flinty character, literally elevated the wine to greener pastures!” says Eikendal winemaker Henry Kotzé.

The other Eikendal medals at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards included silver for Semillon 2007 named Cleopatra’s Wedding Present, and bronze medals for the flagship Bordeaux blend Eikendal Classique 2005 and Eikendal Cabernet Franc 2005.
