Where to find homemade pasta in the Western Cape

Looking for a bowl of comfort? Here’s where to find some of the best homemade pastas in Cape Town and the Winelands.

Cape Town

95 at Parks (Constantia) ?

95 at Parks’s commitment to serving simple, fresh and authentic Italian food is visible in the small selection of pasta dishes on the menu. You can taste this attention to detail and focus. Order the penne with slow-cooked tomato sauce.

Col’Cacchio (V&A Waterfront) ?

Watch your pasta as it’s made at the V&A Waterfront branch of Col’Cacchio. Try the vegan spaghetti and vegballs made with vegan meatballs, pomodoro sauce and vegan parmesan; the prosciutto crudo tortellini with creamy pomodoro sauce and crispy ham; and the spinach gnocchi with pomodoro sauce, peppadew piquante peppers and gremolata.

The Cousins Italian Trattoria (City Bowl)

Everything about this trattoria gives one a sense of home – especially the fact that the cousins are originally from Romagna in Italy. They’ve since made a home in Cape Town, and Andrea makes fresh pasta every morning, “Just like Mama does!”. Nothing beats The Cousins pasta – a homemade tagliolini with cream, mushroom and thyme, plus a thorough coating of Grana Padano from being rolled in its cheese wheel.

Osteria Tarantino (City Bowl)

No one mentions the pasta menu at Osteria Tarantino without raving about the freshly made signature ‘4 Ps Pasta’, which comes with silky pappardelle noodles in a sauce of porcini mushrooms, pancetta, parmesan cheese (those are the four Ps!) and a rich tomato base made with veal mince. Else try the gnocchi gorgonzola. You won’t be disappointed.

True Italic Rustic Restaurant (City Bowl) ?

The name is definitely suggestive of what you expect from this osteria. The menu may change daily according to what’s fresh and seasonal, but the quality, simplicity and authenticity of Luca’s handmade pastas remain the same. The pasta options include pappardelle, tagliolini, tagliatelle, potato gnocchi, ricotta gnocchi, lasagne and ravioli.

Winelands

La Trattoria (Stanford)

The pasta at this Italian restaurant, run by father-and-son team Conrado and Lionello in the heart of Stanford, is hand-made daily. Try the Amatriciana, featuring guanciale, pancetta, homemade tomato sauce, garlic and pecorino romano.

Piza e Vino (Stellenbosch)

The pasta menu at Piza e Vino offers a balance of vegetarian and meat pasta dishes, with the option to have the handmade pasta as spaghetti, tagliatelle, penne, gluten-free or zucchini. New vegetarian and meat additions to the menu include gnocchi in a silky parmesan, gorgonzola and cream sauce with toasted walnuts, and the Bolognese with braised beef mince ragu, mushrooms, mascarpone and grated parmesan.

Trattoria da Vinci (Sedgefield)

Owners Steve and Leah Balletta promise to give their customers a true taste of Italy. We suspect their homemade tagliatelle pasta for the diverse selection of pasta dishes has something to do with how successful they are. Try the seafood marinara with prawns, mussels and calamari in a homemade Napolitana sauce or in a creamy white sauce.
