Gold star for Mimosa Lodge

Mimosa Lodge in Montagu, run by Swiss-German chef-patrons Bernard and Fida Hess, has recently become one of 15 restaurants country-wide to boast a Gold Star rating from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa.

Only 45 restaurants in total in SA have been graded, out of which 15 received a gold star. This requires not less than an 8 out of 10 score with regards to the physical building, fabrics/décor, the menu and wine list, service, housekeeping and cleanliness and kitchen hygiene.

Mimosa Lodge, a luxury country hotel on the Route 62 in the Little Karoo, has definitely made the grade this year. This double-storey Edwardian landmark is an art deco shrine from the chandeliers to the tables. The romantic draped dining room is an intimate stage for fine dining inspired by a large and exquisite herb and vegetable garden which contains over 200 different plants, herbs and veggies, fitting in with their culinary philosophy of freshness.

The elaborate set menu, including yummy dishes such as seared scallops in a saffron-Martini sauce, tournedos Rossini in a Kalahari truffle sauce and divine praline mousse, is paired beautifully with local wines.

Influenced by Escoffier and Paul Bocuse, Bernard trained in the classical French way in Switzerland and became further inspired by his time at Ma Cuisine in Joburg.

What a fabulous treat for a gourmet weekend getaway!
