Halaal bliss in Sophiatown

You will be pleasantly surprised to find Cape Malay cuisine in Sophiatown, Johannesburg these days. Oegties is the new strictly-halaal eatery serving up cape dishes in Westdene.

Oegties, which is a Malay word for sisters, brings back an old community-buzz Sophiatown vibe to the area with a mish mash of nostalgic murals, religious symbols and hints of Cuba – left over from its previous incarnation.

Dine indoors or out and take a tour of the braai area on the roof and the pool room.

Owners Nasieba Nasiep and Moereida Davids have created an entirely alcohol-free bar serving yummy ‘mocktails’ with names like ‘Berry Frizz’.

Food-wise, tuck into light meals, curries, vegetable Breyani, spicy pizzas and Malay gems like ‘Oumens onder die kombers’ and ‘Mavrou’.

If you’re looking for some fun and a dash of alcohol-free Karaoke, go on weekends, when the buzz is infectious.

Main dishes range between R30 and R40. Open from Monday to Thursday, 11am to 8pm; Fridays, 9am-11.30 am and 2pm till late; Saturdays 9am till late; Sundays 9am to close.

To book a table, or a venue for a private function call Nasieba on 011-477 3118.

Oegties is strictly Halaal and no alcohol is served.
