Hertzoggies and hot cross bao are on the menu at this new Stellies restaurant

It’s all about heritage and nostalgia at the newly opened Hamm & Uys Eatery. Or “boerekos met a twist”, as described by the duo behind the restaurant – Johnny Hamman and Marius Uys. The two chefs behind the Slippery Spoon brand are renowned for their imaginative and bespoke culinary offerings at events and weddings. Their talents can now be enjoyed by the public at their restaurant, Hamm & Uys, located on Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch.

The chefs have taken over what was the estate’s bistro and introduced a relaxed country-style eatery inspired by the surroundings on the 337-year-old farm. With its carefully preserved heritage buildings, Johnny and Marius offer the nostalgia of their moms’s cooking, re-invented for the modern palate.

Head chef Reinette Botha will wow guests with a drool-worthy menu. Think blackened banana bread served with whipped homemade Amasi ricotta cheese for breakfast. Lunch options include the likes of a ground marrow and chateaubriand burger on a rusk-dough bun, and hot cross bao with fried pickled fish in a mosbolletjie jacket. The chicken wings glazed with Wilson cola toffee are also sure to be popular.

On Sundays the team offers a laidback buffet-style family feast, filled with all the hedonistic delights of an eyes-bigger-than-your-plate Sunday lunch – fire-roasted vegetables, Bisto-sous aartappels, more meat than you can handle, and a dessert table overflowing with South African crowd-pleasers like hertzoggies, old-school Peppermint Crisp tart and pink Rice Krispies treats.
