Hot eateries to serve up limited-edition dishes for one week only

The annual Street Food Festival has begun. After a wildly successful event in Cape Town, and in the run-up to the Joburg leg this weekend, the SFF team is keeping the deliciousness going by teaming up with the cities’ hippest eateries, which will serve up some pretty epic once-off dishes from 3 to 7 September. Here’s what’s on the SFF Snack Map menu.

Cape Town

Clarke’s

The New York-style diner on Bree Street added a glorious club sandwich to the menu for the week. The generously portioned classic club comes with all the trimmings: bacon, iceberg lettuce, tomato, cheese, aioli and perfectly fried egg. The dish is topped off with a mound of golden fries and a side of ketchup.

Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants

Meat lovers, look no further. Cape Town’s coolest butchery is bringing out the big guns with a brandy-and-Coke boerewors roll, naturally. This bad boy is made using Jack Parow’s brandy, a reduced Coke syrup, grass-fed beef and spice blends. It’s served with some pickles and a secret sauce. Doily optional.

The General Store

This Bree Street lunch hatch will be whipping up fresh batches of the famous filled sugar doughnuts. This time they’ll be piped with an apple-and-pecan crumble custard. The doughy morsels are hot property on this street, so make sure you get there early to avoid missing out!

Hokey Poke

Known for its bright bowls, this poké bar will be serving up portions of limited edition Crispy Paradise. The dish has got all the textures and flavours going for it with soy-soaked tuna or salmon, avo, citrus, fresh coconut, miso mayo, and golden tempura shallots. Yes, man!

Max Bagels

The bagel bosses are bringing back the kerbagel for the SFF Snack Map. The glorious buns sandwich together roasted lamb, crispy aubergine, cabbage salad, tomato, hummus, tzatiki, pickled red onion and an optional dousing of Sambal Oelek chilli sauce. It’s also served with a sweet-and-sour hot pickle for an extra kick.

The House of Machines

The team over at THoM have yet to reveal their dish for the week but we can surmise that it will be some crafty cocktail or tasty snack – have you tried their exceptional Old Fashioned and damn good hot dogs?!

Raptor Room

The quirky brunch and lunch spot will be adding to its gourmet comfort food repertoire with limited-edition samosas. The crisp, golden triangles will be stuffed with three cheeses and a vibrant green chutney for dipping.

Joburg

Baha Taco

Order a pineapple tequila and get your taco fix with Baha Taco’s limited-addition golden and satisfyingly crunchy beer-battered hake taco. Don’t forget to add some extra toppings of sour cream and guac.

Ono Eatery

This health bowl and poké bar will be creating a dish of spring colours with this prawn bowl. The dish features avo, fresh carrot, radishes, green beans, roasted nuts and rice.

Post, Breakfast, Lunch

Head to this bright and breezy corner eatery for a hearty traditional prego roll. The beefy dish will come with a 120g sirloin steak cooked in a chilli, red wine and garlic reduction. Best eaten with your hands, obviously.

Saigon Suzy

The quirky barbecue and rock ‘n roll bar with influences of South East Asia will be cooking up a broken rice BBQ bowl. The tempting creation will come with your choice of chicken, beef or pork skewers, egg fried rice, carrot, daikon, kimchi and fresh herbs.

The Whippet

The popular coffee haunt is bringing a flavour infusion to the mix with a coconut-milk and lime Jasmine rice burger infused with chilli and topped off with coleslaw and exotic mushrooms.
