Jozi’s new island getaway in the heart of Melville

The multicultural melting pot that is Melville’s 7th Street has welcomed a wonderfully kitsch and seriously cool duo: The Anti-Social Social Club and The Tiny Tiki Bar. And whilst the owners are the same, the concepts are not.

Owners Alex and Caitlin were inspired by a vacation to Bali; every bar they frequented inspired them to bring a little bit of the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia to Joburg.

The Tiny Tiki Bar offers ‘tiki’ cocktails and all things bacon in a tropical beach-bar setting. Rum-based cocktails are the name of the game, with a good mix of traditional and signature tipples on offer that are fruity, fun and pack a punch. The food menu is bacon-centric; all the bacon is cured and smoked on-site then cooked with combinations of miso, yuzu, herbs and maple syrup. It’s an all-day breakfast joint that’s wonderfully vibrant and seriously fun.

The focus is on Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine at The Anti-Social Social Club, a bright and exotic restaurant and cocktail bar that prides itself on not taking life too seriously. The menu has been meticulously put together and the offering is stellar. Think superb Korean BBQ ribs, tuna tataki and delectable boa sliders filled with hoisin-glazed pork. For dessert, expect tempting fried dough balls filled with passion-fruit custard. If you’re looking for a low-key dinner, go early, otherwise enjoy the rowdy vibe later on..
