Lentil pancakes at Masala Dosa

I have just had the most fabulous lunch at this tiny little eating place in Long Street.

This gem is certainly worth a visit for something very new to SA – crispy and oversized paper thin rice and lentil pancakes called Dosa. This is a big trend in New York at the moment.

These treats arrive at the table on big white trays with bowls of fragrant curried fillings of lamb and spinach, potato or chicken and butternut alongside more bowls of coconut chutney and sambar (a spicy vegetable broth).

They are absolutely delicious.

Also try the Wada – a lentil savoury doughnut with ginger, coconut and coriander. Very simple but with a stylish Indian stencil garnishing of tumeric.

There is a house red and white or simply drink an Indian beer, a cup of sweet Chai tea or a fresh mango Lassi.

Cost: Around R35
