New Bree Street brunch spot, Between Us – reviewed

Between Us is a beautiful new modern space that uses seasonal produce to serve up breakfast and lunch. It’s owned and run by twin sister duo Jesse and Jamie Friedberg, who were the original owners of Skinny Legs Café.

Food

The breakfast menu is divided into four sections. It starts with ‘Grains’, which is a selection of cereal, pancakes and porridges. I highly recommend trying the honeycomb, cashew butter and fruit compote combo – the oats are deliciously creamy, with a sweet citrus bite from its topping of candied orange peel. The egg section comprises scrambles and cooked full breakfasts, one of which is the delicious frittata crammed full of greens, served with in-house hot-smoked trout and a herby side salad. If you love mushrooms, try the double mushroom butter scramble made with sautéed mushrooms and plenty of buttery goodness.

The ploughman’s cheese, fruit and charcuterie boards are perfect for sharing if you’re in the mood for a continental-style breakfast. The breakfast menu ends with a sweet selection of scones and the signature rum banana bread that comes served with brown butter.

If you’re in the mood for a salad for lunch, try the Niçoise, smoked trout or burrata and braised leek versions. For something a little more substantial, try the oxtail ragu pasta or the cavolo Nero black rice topped with a poached egg. For meat lovers, there is Chalmar beef fillet or chargrilled chicken to choose from.

Finish lunch off on a sweet note with either a helping of gelato or a slice of baked cheesecake.

Drinks

A selection of single-roast coffees is available on the menu, as well as a selection of single-estate teas and fresh citrus juices. There’s an interesting section named ‘Shrubs and Sodas’, which features drinks akin to fruit cordials. Try the apricot and sumac, which is delightfully sweet and tart at the same time. It’s very refreshing. They also offer chai and hot chocolate made from homemade cashew nut milk.

Service

Service is attentive and speedy. The kitchen is quick to prepare food orders. The owners are also on the floor servicing tables and chatting to customers.

Ambience

The space is large and filled with chunky wooden tables. Dotted across the restaurant are beautiful floral arrangements. The large bar is decorated with thin gold vases with blooms arranged in them. On the quiet morning I’m there, the open-plan kitchen is neat and surprisingly calm. There’s an outside seating area with views of Bree Street, as well as a small courtyard seating area.
