Whether you’re vegan or just up for an intimate dinner party with great food and cool new people, Green & Vegan’s fortnightly suppers – held in couple Patrick Knight and Karen Fletcher’s Green Point home – should be on your to-do list.
A four-course plant-based dinner with nary a lentil patty in sight? Believe it, says Karen and Patrick. The two recently decided to start hosting pop-up dinners to prove that vegan food can be incredibly tasty when done right, while offering vegans a place to sit down to a multi-course meal without the concern of inadvertently eating something not plant-based.
Vegans since 2012, Karen and Patrick have done a range of plant-based cookery courses, so their repertoire is vast – from cultured nut cheeses and faux smoked salmon, to vegan bacon and hollandaise – meaning there will always be something new and interesting on the fortnightly menu.
The dinners are usually kicked off by a cocktail or mocktail crammed full of, as they say, “as many good-for-you ingredients as we can squeeze into a glass”, before everyone’s seated at the dining room table. For starters, you can expect the likes of smoked ‘not salmon’ canapés, yellow-pea and butternut soup, or green gazpacho; while mains can include anything from courgette ravioli and cheesy polenta wedges to vegan bacon scallops with hollandaise sauce and green salad.
For pudding, there’s a selection of three desserts: treats like lemon-choc truffles, saffron panna cotta, and chia, date and walnut slices. If you can manage it too, the evening always ends with a vegan cheese platter – and tea or coffee, to help revive you out of the inevitable food coma.
