Durbanites can look forward to a new restaurant and adjoining craft brewery that will open their doors soon at The Foundry in the city’s hip creative hub, Station Drive Precinct.

The new venture by Sean and Marcelle Roberts, who own Café 1999 and Unity Brasserie and Bar, will occupy a large space in The Foundry in Station Drive. It will consist of a daytime eatery called S43 and an adjoining brewery that will house Sean Roberts’s craft brewery, That Brewing Co.

Owing to the size of the space, the restaurant will also operate as a function venue for events and pop-ups, explains Marcelle. “We will be serving creative breakfasts and lunches with a focus on healthy food, ” she says, adding that they plan to create a special menu of food and beer pairings and tasting platters that will be updated regularly. Master brewer Paul Ten Hoorn Boer will continue to man That Brewing Co., which is departing from its former location in Umlilo. Marcelle explains the move: “We’ve been brewing beer for almost two years now, but the brewery has outgrown its former space.”

S43 is named for its street address at 43 Station Drive in Durban’s flourishing new creative district. The area forms part of the city’s urban renewal movement and is home to a number of creative businesses, markets and coffee shops. “There are office blocks and coffee shops popping up everywhere. The street is undergoing an exciting revival,” enthuses Marcelle.

The team hopes to open the restaurant and brewery in late May or the beginning of June 2015. Keep your eye on Eat Out for updates.
