Located within a five-minute walk of the centre of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch Kitchen offers locals and visitors alike a relaxed atmosphere in this vibrant hub. The restaurant operates in a national monument building that previously housed the very popular Jan Cats Restaurant and Bar, established in 1987. It’s been transformed into a cosy spot for families and friends.

Diners of all ages will find something on the menu, which can kick off with a breakfast buffet after a night at The Stellenbosch Hotel. Indulge in flapjacks with maple syrup; a croissant with scrambled eggs, bacon and Grana Padano; or a full farmer’s breakfast. Lunch sees several options, including a soup of the day with homemade ciabatta; ale-battered hake with hand-cut potato chips and mushy peas; shepherd’s pie made with Karoo lamb and topped with Grana Padano mash; and prawn risotto. All dishes are prepared with the freshest seasonal ingredients primarily sourced within 50km of Stellenbosch.

Staying for dinner? It’s a great plan. The menu includes Chalmar beef sirloin with mushroom purée, caramelised onion, potato gratin; a beef Wellington with mushroom duxelles, braised baby onion, vine tomatoes and red wine jus; and the Stellenbosch Kitchen Monster Burger, which comes with spicy aioli, onion marmalade and Healey’s cheddar, all piled high on a sesame bun. Desserts comprise banana bread with an Amarula crème pâté, banana ice cream and salted caramel; a dark chocolate and toffee fondant with white chocolate ice cream and passion fruit anglaise; and a raspberry mille-feuille with raspberry cream and vanilla bean ice cream.

Of course children are sorted at Stellenbosch Kitchen too. Love the Monster Burger? Let your little one delight in the Youngster Burger. It comes topped with onion marmalade and Gruyere cheese. Else they can opt for the battered hake with hand-cut chips and mushy peas, or the Napolitana pasta. For dessert they can choose from freshly made ice creams and classic milkshakes.
