Pete Goffe-Wood’s favourite restaurants

Know of all the obvious eateries, but looking for an insider’s hot tips of where to eat in the Mother City? Eat Out DStv Food Network Produce Awards judge Pete Goffe-Wood shares his favourite restaurants for a lazy brunch, romantic dinner and the best pizza in Cape Town.

Food alchemist Pete Goffe-Wood qualified at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks before establishing himself as a chef, food critic, events organiser, author and TV personality. He hosts his popular series of no-nonsense Kitchen Cowboys workshops for men, and has been selected as one of the three judges in the first two seasons of MasterChef South Africa.

My favourite place…

For take-away coffee before work
Jason in Bree Street. There’s always a great vibe and some fairly decadent pastries for that necessary sugar rush to get the day started.

For a week-day breakfast
Dario’s Café in Hout Bay. They serve fabulous omelettes and great coffee, and on Friday mornings there’s Grappa.

For a lazy Saturday morning brunch
Manna Epicure in Kloof Street. You have to try the Flat Bread Breakfast – it’s the ultimate hangover cure.

For a business lunch
Belthazar at the V&A Waterfront. They have magnificent meat and an excellent wine list.

For Sunday lunch with the family
The Foodbarn in Noordhoek. Franck Dangereux’s food never disappoints.

For a romantic dinner
La Mouette in Sea Point. A summertime meal in their front courtyard around the fountain is just magical.

For a blow-the-budget celebratory dinner
The Test Kitchen in Woodstock, because it doesn’t get much better than this.

For an end-of-the-month weekday dinner
Again, La Mouette in Sea Point. This is probably one of the most underrated restaurants, but it’s my favourite in Cape Town. Fabulous food and the best value for money in town.

For a pizza
Massimo’s Pizza Club in Hout Bay. Without doubt, this is the best pizza in Cape Town.

For Asian cuisine
Kitima in Hout Bay. (Winner of Eat Out’s Best Asian Restaurant for 2011.) They offer great service, good value for money and pretty authentic Thai food.

For a great view
Salt Restaurant and Bar in Bantry Bay (now closed). There is nowhere on the planet with more majestic sunsets.

For takeaways
Thai Café in Hout Bay. I love their authentic Thai food cooked by Thai cooks.
